Spring bear hunt ... advice?

Thanks Randy,

Are you sure 44 bears is enough of a sample?

(just kidding!)

Good advice on the 360. Our local bears are not usually real big like the coastal variety... so going with a .308, any particular bullet recommendation as to penetration, (don't want any exit wounds) etc?
I've got some factory 150gr noslers, and some 180gr as well kicking around here. Also some SMK's .

Any of the above will be just fine. No kidding. One nice shot behind the front leg will ensure you have no meat wasted. If you dont mind losing a quarter, I'd drill the bear right thru the shoulder. Head shots are out.

Your 308 will KO any bear.

As far as recipes go, I've only roasted a couple. Otherwise I don't keep the meat for myself. But I'm sure there are guys on the site who have many many ways to cook the bear.

Good luck. It aint that far away till the season is open.

ps: re: 44 bears. I used to kill problem bears ( 2 that killed people). Combine that with those Ive hunted. And I dont notch my rifle to keep track. I had to keep papers on the kills so that is how I know how many Ive taken.....

Now I just use bear bangers and other deterrents when i go after them. The odd time I use a rifle but not so much now.

if you want a rug you need to skin it as soon as you can or get it to a person that will skin it for you, the hair starts to fall out if to late, also if you skin it put it in a bag with salt this helps keep it longer. as far as i remember.

That's in warm weather, my bear was shot on May 5th last year and wasn't skinned until May 6th around 5 pm. It was also slung over my spare tire on my SUV for 3 hours worth of driving.

Don't try to wait for a big guy. Anything that's before May long week end is good. After that you'd better wait till late fall. I mean, the rug.

But, can you cook like he can? I didn't think so. :p

...and maybe it was YOU that was bad luck. :D

Hmm, lets see my track record at "guiding"

Foxer and his pal.

1st day, one opportunity to kill a bear (it was a miss)

2nd day- Foxer kills 6'6" bear

Steady Girl-

1st day in unfamiliar turf- She kills her first big game animal ever

2nd day- I kill record book bear

Scott-

No shots fired.

Yup, it' s Scott that is bad luck!

:):):)

That's what I thought. Was Scott using his little .410 trapper? With slugs, of course.:p

We're thinking of trying the Brookmere area, just above the Tulameen, Coalmont etc.

Was in there for deer before, and we saw lots of bear sign.

Now, THAT would be interesting.

Here's an idea;

You could do some field testing for the next bear defense thread on what combo of ammo is best for a charging Griz.

How about #7 to blind him first, (which would also be good for grouse if you see one), then alternate 00 Buck, slug, 00 Buck, slug.

:dancingbanana:

Good luck with that!:p

"...is there a spring hunt in Ontario..." Nope. Canceled by the Harris government on 15 Jan., 1999. McGuinty won't to open it again either.

oh no.........not the blinding technique again:eek:...................lmao

I think Brenneke makes a 3" .410 slug. probably wouldn't be to bad on a bear :D

But, you couldn't use the blinding technique, because you only have a single shot .410. Unless you do some reloading drills to get faster.

:shotgun:

...I'm pretty sure, waaaaaay back in the archives, Clarke did some testing of the blinding technique on a propane canister. It should be stickied! :p
