I did the same drive a couple of weeks ago. On the way to Rupert it was very sloooow with heavy fog, on the way back I had to wait an extra day and a half cause the highway was closed with a rockslide.

It was my first time through there and there sure is some beautiful country in that area. :)

Is there much of a bear population immediately around Rupert? I'd think so with the rivers, but was told there was only a few blacks and no grizz. Sorry for the hijack. ;)
You mean the slide past Big Oliver?

Yes the country is beautiful, .... when you can see it!

Not sure about rupurt, but I don't see why there shouldn't be a few big bears around there!

Ah dragon lake :D I got my first blacky there!
They have done some hard core logging down Shist Creek in the last couple of years and then gated it off (i mean the way to the trapper cabin.)the only way to get back there is with a good truck or an ATV and got an ATV. But that is one of the best hunting spots I've ever hunted tones of grizzles moose and blackys. We have pulled most of our bears and a few moose out of there in the last few years.

So when do you leave for the hunt?

Getting things together?

Ummm... yeah, sorta.

I think i might just head up to terrace or some place closer to 6-10, stay in a motel and drive out on the logging roads one day, maybe rent a jet boat the next, etc.

Keeping my options open. My buddy just got a 2007 rubicon jeep so if he would come up that would be a great bush buggy to have around.

Other than that, I think with the info in this thread i am set. I was gonna call death-junky, but lost the PM, lol ... so i need to do that still

Oh and I was thinking about going up 1st or 2nd week of may, would most of the snow be gone by then?

Cheers,

Alex

I know from the Skeena side you would definitely need a boat to get to 6-10. I myself would not just go rent a boat and take it into the SKeena it is a nasty river and it is very heavily influenced by tides as well, I have never taken my boat on the Skeena but have been on it in others boats. I do hunt the islands with my canoe but they are short 25-50m crossings. If I was you Olek, i would focus on Alder Creek or Scotia Creek, you would need a boat to access them and I think they are actively logging those areas but you could walk those roads once there. I am not familiar with the Kitimat side but as far as from the maps I have there are no roads into 6-10 at all.

We hunted moose on the Skeena a few years ago and there was a road on the south side of the skeena, I think that must be the one you are talking about Gibbs, I have never been on it, but it stops about a km or so before 6-10 and in my map is labeled as Whitebottom.

As for bears, there is no place better, then along the Skeena for Blacks or grizz.
Depending on when you are up in our neck of the woods, i would love to either get out with you or have a beer, I am in Rupert.

Cool, thanks for the offer and the additional info. When I go up there I'll have a few days to poke about so we'll see where i'll end up. In any case, I think it's still a doable hunt and if a road stops 1km before 6-10 so be it, i'll just rent a quad, for the next section ,lol :dancingbanana:

Anyhow, I think Riley has some idea about this area so i'll grab him on the way out into the woods, if it does not work out i can blame the misfortune on him ,lol.... just kiddin'

Still have a few months to go, maybe they'll start logging another patch of 6-10 and build me a road in :onCrack: :runaway:

Yes, indeed, forgot about this thread in all the excitement around here. I hope that you had a great hunt and that things went well for you.
