It's not the ammo choice, it's shot placement that's key. But they are tough and strong-willed. I take them regularly with a high-power .177 pellet out to 35 yards with head shots. But I'm scoped for their tiny kill zone.
I have taken squirrels with Benji HB-20 pellet pistols and blowguns to off the deck railing too... but try that when you are forced to take a 75 yard shot at a squirrel bobbing in the top of a beech tree... already conceded that anything works if it is squarely struck in the head... but if you are off even a little, then an HM2 or LR with HP's can make all the difference between wounding/loosing & killing/recovering... and all of my squirrel rifles are scoped.
