Stag 10 build and range review

Stag 10 build on the cheap

Finished my build recently, rifle has not even been shot yet. I figured I would share my goal for the build and experience.

Goal was to build my Stag 10 using parts I found off the EE, waiting for sales, scrounge from my inventory etc. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt when browsing the EE and finding deals. Basically I wanted to do it on the cheap because outside of moose season (once every 4 years) this is a range toy for me.

Goal 1 - look like an older M16 with an A2 stock - achieved
Goal 2 - completed under $1500 achieved
Goal 3 - accuracy and reliability - yet to be determined
Goal 4 - enjoy the build process and hunting for parts - achieved

Build estimate is as follows.

Stag 10 receiver set $650 (black friday sale)
Bolt ( Toolcraft nickel boron) used but brand new condition and cheapie handguard used off EE for $300
Barrel (TNA heavy - I believe Anderson Mfg) used but like new condition, flash hider and gas block used of ee $225
A2 style stock and buffer tube New - $150
Mag $39
Gas tube and rental of go/no go (TNA) $45
Ambi charging handle - used off EE $50

Total build cost $1459

I did purchase a Bushnell red dot for it top complete the M16 look, during the April Bushnell sale/rebate scheme which will cost me $140 after rebate. So if did factor that in I'm at $1599.

Also pictured with iron sights - I may go that route also.

Weight - rifle only 8.4 LBS
Weight - iron sights attached 9.3 LBS
Weight - red dot 9.3

Built mine but now I can’t shoot it.

Please spread the word. Don’t vote liberal ever again.

ya it sucks as I have all the parts for another upper but still needed an upper.
Was gonna grab the new MRA or a stag 10 upper yesterday on payday...… but no, Trudeau dashed my plans and made uppers prohib? God that's just ridiculous.

I was going to build a whole new upper in a 82 old school style and try to get another lower now it's useless, and I had just enough money saved up for two ambidextrous lower AR-15 parts kits

I’m finishing a 20” barrel build, despite the OIC, and am looking for the correct gas tube to mount on my faxon barrel. Can anyone fill me in on where to find a suitable gas tube?

Much appreciated,

When I built one with a Faxon, it looked like the AR-15 rifle length gas tube was too short. I ended up sending it back because there was no AR-10 rifle length gas tubes in Canada.

You could try a regular AR-15 rifle length gas tube first. True North Arms has them in stock.

ATRS shows a 20" barrel available in their Modern Hunter configurator. Since currently with they cannot sell this rifle during the OIC/FRT fight, they may have gas tube's left from their Hunter builds in their parts bin, or may be able to fabricate one to your specification.

Thanks guys. TNA was able to hook me up with a longer tube. For the benefit of other builders, here is what Faxon told me:

“ Thank you for taking the time to contact us! Our .308 barrels are designed to work with either AR-15 gas tubes or the slightly longer "Armalite length" gas tubes (about 15.5" for rifle length tubes). Some customers prefer the increased engagement with the longer gas tubes so we have a few places that we recommend to get them from (they are surprisingly hard to find sometimes)”

I never did find the "proper" length for the Faxon barrel I installed on a STAG-10. I think needed 12 1/16" but got away with a slightly shorter 11.75". Nobody including TNA could help me find that length.

If we get a new government for Christmas and we end up being able to use our toys again …

What optics have you folks found to suit your Stag 10s? Mine has never fired a shot. I bought it intending to be able hit gongs out to 600m but with the primary purpose being a handy rifle for deer. I was thinking a 1-4 or a 1-6 or even a Trijicon. Something clear with a bit of magnification but I don’t want to add much weight to what’s already a hefty rifle.
