It's a AR, so it's a lego gun. Like most people they probably want to build different uppers. Is it possible for a light weight barrel like this Faxon rifle length pencil barrel. I really want to build just a conventional AR-10 battle rifle with flat top upper, normal FSB and hand guards.

This is the route I'm taking with my first build/upper.

Currently, the STAG-10L weighs in at 8.6lbs in a configuration similar to shown above with the 16.5" handguard. At 18.6", we should still be under the 9lb mark. The barrel would be milspec chrome lined and phosphated, 1/10" twist, 4150CMV.

Sample pic of an 18" barrel below, taper to .75" gas block.

We invite your feedback.

Thanks for this great project. I was waiting for a good lh .308win. As usual, Stag takes good care of lefties.

That barrel looks like a shooter. But I'd like to keep it close to 8 lbs with a short-light handguard. Could agressive fluting shave .75lbs off that?
Hesitating around a 20" lenght.

I'm not an expert but I'd think 1:11" is better suited for the common 145-180gr range.
I'd pay a little extra for 5R rifling too.

I want as close to MOA or sub. I wouldn't mind hunting with it but i will want to use this as a DMR, precision rig. 1-10, 1-11 twist rate would be nice. Medium contour barrel. .75 gas block should be on point. Rifle length gas tube i assume??

Agreed!

I am guessing but will there be a "Bones" version in 308 as well. That's what I would go for. It wouldn't need a muzzle device either, I would want my own option for that anyways.

if the rifle is set up properly so it balances well..... what's the concern with weight? I mean most decent hunting rifles are in that range anyways. Heck , all of my hunting rifles are well over 10 pounds loaded out.
I'll take reliability and accuracy over aesthetics and worrying about a few ounces here or there is not really a concern as long as the balance point is achieved once I equip it.
gonna make my own handguard so can shave some finished weight there no problem.

My vote for 20” rifle length gas, 11.25” twist, SS and Chrommoly. Med. Palma and modified Palma for the guys whom have forgotten what push-ups are, threaded 5/8”x24 with optional target crown and threaded muzzle cap. For .308

6XC would be a cool option, but I suspect that is too out there for mass consumption.

I was going to recommend a barrel in this profile but 18.6”. Or the Faxon Gunner profile. If not consider stocking a barrel similar to the Faxon. I bet it would be popular with the people who bought receiver sets and just want a Lightweight hunting .308 at minimum length. There are dozens of options for guys who want a 20” Match grade heavy barrel. Lightweight 18.6” barrels that are on the lower end of the price spectrum don’t really exist.

If not I’ll just do what I normally do and build my own.

Well said, my thoughts exactly. The xcrm, M17, 102 and MH didn't hit the mark on a light, affordable, minimum length hunting rifle. Eventually someone might get us there

Will you guys be making handguards available? I can't seem to find any decent selection of AR10 handguards anywhere. Just wondering, as I'm considering the bones .308 package.

I'm ok with a 20 inch or 18.6 for barrel length. Weight, fairly important. Trying to keep that down, as for barrel material would prefer 4150 chrome lined, but I'm sure a stainless offering would move off the shelves as well. I like the mlok rail on the 6.5. Honestly as long as the rail covers the gas block thats all the rail I want. Extra rail means extra weight. Would midwest rails go with the stag barrel nut?
