stainless dilemma?

I have a savage and like it, but the winchester M70 is a nicer rifle, finding a left handed rifle in the make that you want is part of the reason I dont have a winchester.

I was going to buy an Extreme Weather. I ended up buying the X-Bolt SS in a 300 WM. When I compared the two rifles, I liked the feel of the Browning over the M70. The one thing I considered was the texture of the stock. I thought when the Extreme Weather got wet, I felt the grip would get slippery. I am happy with my choice of rifle.

I went shopping for my new stainless 7 mm rem mag today.

Other guns I added to my original list were the Remington stainless and the Browning stainless A-bolt.

They let me handel the model 70 extream weather..and I was surprised at the feel of the bell and carlson stock. Part of the attraction to the model 70 was the B&C stock..but after handeling the gun it just did not feel like I thought it would.
Ruger 77 stainless felt ok
Sako A7 looked much cheaper then I thought it would.
They did not have the Remington mountain ( .308 )ss in stock.
I forgot to look at a weatherby ss

And the WINNER..to my surprise was a browning X-bolt ss with a zeiss conquest ss 3x9x40.

I will admit I was an A-bolt guy who scoffed at the plastic additions to the new X-bolt.

But the Browning x-bolt felt the best out of all the guns I tried.

Just like Durnet suggested in his reply the X-bolt just felt good.

With stainless talley rings and Zeiss conquest it looks ok as well.

Congratulations on your new rifle! It's always worth handling the different models in person since, as you noticed, they can really differ in how they feel in your hands. You got that X-Bolt/scope at a great price, too!

Stickhunter it was a good deal. The trip to Mcadam is always woth while. The TC and Hatsan they have listed were left behind by me today.

Having the abilty to trade in always helps take the sting out of getting another gun.

You will love the Stainless X-Bolt. I have the same thing in .325 and absolutly love it in the fall for moose. The dura-touch stock is amazing and doesn't get slippery in any conditions and actually feels warm too compared to other synthetic stocks! I really do wish something similar was available on other stocks!

Great gun...have fun!!!

Very nice! That SS scope and SS rifle combo looks awesome!
I was in the same dilemma last week. I went for the Model 70 Extreme 270wsm. With a Vortex Viper pst 2.5-10x44
after handling them…. its the one that felt right to me

bringing my old post back to life for a bit to update my findings from the original post in 2014.

I have made the switch to Stainless in the majority of my hunting guns. I still have and the 7mm rem mag Browning X-bolt in the photos and am very happy with it. I also now have a Rem 700 mountain stainless in 7mm-08 and am equally happy with it.

The latest addition to my crappy weather hunting rifle's is a remington XCR tactical .223 with a bell and carlson stock. I am super happy with the look and feel of this gun. The XCR finish seems super tough and from the reviews I have read will have no issues with rain , snow and being dragged up and down from my treestand.

Eventually I plan to get a winchester extreme weather just to have another rugged all weather hunting gun.

The days of me dinging up wooden stocks while hunting or worrying about scratches and rust on my blued barrel are hopefully behind me.

Thanks for the update pinkmoon.

Enjoy it when guys bring up older threads like this to give a report after some time has passed.

Would like to see more of this sort of thing.

Well done! Now I've got to ask... is it just coincidence that the same dealer from which you purchased your X-bolt just sold a second-hand XCR Tactical in 223? I'm not sure if I mentioned it on this thread, but the black Trinyte finish that Remington is using on those rifles is a favourite of mine for foul weather.

very observant.
No coincidence at all that .223 is now in my gun safe.
I really like the look of that Trinyte finish as well.
My conversion to weather resistant hunting rigs is pretty much complete. Even my pistols and my 10/22 are stainless :)

Almost sold my 7-08 stainless mountain rifle as well as my .308 Sako stainless as I was lusting after a Sako carbonlight but finally talked myself out of it. I love the idea of the carbonlight but can not get over the price tag just to save a pound of weight. I love my mountain rifle and have decided to forgo the ###iness of the carbonlight and instead put some top quality glass on my current mountain rifle. Other then the cheap scopes such as the 8 oz simmons I think the Luepold lightweight scope is the lightest available with good glass. I already have the lightest rings and base combo out there and will now turn my attention to locating a quality but low weight scope.
