I'm considering the Steiner M5xi in the 3-15x for a 308. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this scope?

The seeming problems with their new T5xi line kinda spooks me despite the M5xi being made in Germany and the T5xi being made in the U.S.

Thanks in advance!

The tracking was pretty bad on the early runs of the T5 line. They're made in the same place as Burris optics in the US. Both companies are owned by, if I recall right, Beretta.

What reticle did yours have? Did you find the glass quality worth the price?

MSR reticle. Glass is obviously subjective but it was very nice. Had 1-buddy comment that he thought it looked nicer than the S&B 5-25. I personally preferred the Schmidt. But we are splitting hairs here.
I had a first generation model so the turrets were a little bit indistinct. This was improved on later production units.
Loved the 2nd turn indicator. Brilliant design. Was a little stiff in the transition between 1st and 2nd Rev. This isn't uncommon, some of my Schmidt's exhibit this as well. Just the nature of having a mechanical 2nd Rev indicator.

Overall a great scope that was at one time a bargain compared to 5-25 S&B. Not sure what it is priced at now but it is definitely top tier and compares favorably against anything in this segment.

'made in Germany' 'made in the U.S.'??? When did Steiner stop manufacturing all optics in China? You sure its not the box thats made in Germany?

They have a recall out for all the scopes with tracking issues. If you have an older one you can send it in and they replace the turrets for free. They also have great warranty. I looked heavily into getting one when I was in the market. Very nice optic

I'm not qualified to a real optic review, but I can say it performed very well for me at distance, in $hitty weather with crummy visibility (image still appeared very clear despite overcast and cloudy skies with rain).

It tracked well at 1,350 m, returned to zero every time. Perhaps a more experiences shooter with an M5Xi can chime in?

I had the T5Xi and mine was fine, no issues.

They never made any optics in China. All glass is German, some scopes are assembled in the US.

Absolute BS! ALL Steiner optics were produced in China....if you are trying to create a little revisionist history here....good luck... I know better. If they have actually changed their sources recently...thats a different story....
Personally not interested in their optics...saw too many of their plastic binoculars fail.

Steiner is as German as Carl Wetzlar is...

Well you make it easy to discount your opinion. Steiner binoculars have always been made in Germany. It isn't new or a marketing gimmick, that's were they have always been made.
So while you obviously have a strong opinion it does not appear to be based on fact. Again if you have information including references perhaps you might take the time to post it.

From an interview with Adrian Warwas:
"Q: Steiner is a German company. Some of other German companies have moved one part of their production to factories situated in foreign countries, especially China and Japan. Has Steiner followed that trend?
A:That is true: STEINER is 100% a German Company. Our major suppliers for raw materials are located in Germanybut in a globalised world materials and components are often from different origin."

Next time you chat with a for real Steiner employee (not the local rep) ask him where the roof prisms for his binoculars are made.

https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/751508/0000751508-99-000002.txt:

"Most of the Company's products are manufactured at its facilities in Bayreuth, Germany. The Company manufactures most of its products out of raw materials such as glass, metals and plastic. In 1993 the Company has begun to phase out the production of some components in order to reduce expenses and lowered the production costs of several products (at the very low end of its production line) by outsourcing the manufacturing of some components. This process has continued to date. The original counterparty in Eastern Europe turned out to be expensive and unreliable, and the Company has moved its outsourcing operation to the Far East where its counterparties have proven to be more reliable and more cost-effective."
etc etc

"The Company continues its strategic cost-reduction program and a search for additional outsourcing opportunities. The Company's counterparties in the Far East -- for outsourcing of components -- have proved to be more reliable and more cost-effective."

the two quotes above are from their "10K" submissions to the SEC ... I have seen other stuff published that they have been trying to bury that described the Chinese binocular manufacture. ... Anyway .. do what you like and spend money as you wish...

This stuff has been around the internet for a long long time ... and usually sources who really dont care one way or another. If they are now "assembling" some components in the US (or Germany) - to complete a hunting scope -- good for them. Search CGN ... IIRC there is a thread that discusses Steiner binocular failures somewhere.

*BTW -- I see they (with their associate, Burris Optics) have been acquired by Beretta
