Sterling Arms International R18 Mk3 Part 1 Review - Specifications and Initial Impressions

With the fall of TSE has it been announced what store(s) will be carrying these when they come out ?
The entire suite of participating vendors has not yet been announced. You can bet that Target Sports in Gormley (GTA) ON, and a new retail outlet in Calgary (yet to be named) will be established to serve Southern AB and online orders. JR Cox has already rented secure and licensed retail space in Calgary in order to fulfill pre-booked Firearm Safety Courses and has stated his intent to also sell rifles from that location.

Bartok - any idea whether full drop-in barrel assemblies in different lengths may be available for the R18 Mk3, for those of us who may want to run a restricted version of the gun...?
The intent is to market the rifles with a standard 18.5" Barrel and let the aftermarket deal with restricted-length Tubes, heavy Match Barrels and so forth. The barrel drawings and specifications will be published on the R18 Website so that aftermarket Barrel manufacturers such as IBI have the correct information to work with. It should be a fairly simple matter to have the custom Barrel of your choosing manufactured specifically for your rifle/carbine.

Still waiting patiently... I was hoping to buy it for Xmas but I don't think that's gonna happen.

Would love to see this thing with a SOPMOD stock on it.
We will be lucky to see accuracy testing results by Christmas.. I just started buying parts and accessories, while waiting. Lage stock for starters.

I certainly wouldn't count on an Xmas purchase, unless you are talking Xmas 2025. January '25 should see the launch, assuming we can get on with testing the platform by early December....

Here you go - direct from Part 1 of my Review:

We will be lucky to see accuracy testing results by Christmas.. I just started buying parts and accessories, while waiting. Lage stock for starters.

Buying parts and accessories is the smart play right now. Get your optic and mount sorted, any different furniture you prefer (the Turkish Pistol Grip is actually quite nice), BUIS (if you want 'em), Weapon Light, VFG/AFG and so on and so forth.

HANDLING

The Mk3’s balance point is directly in front of the Magazine Well, which makes for ideal weight distribution when carrying and shouldering the new rifle. When equipped with “iron sights”, the Mk3 feels very lightweight and quite lively in the hands. It is quick to point and thanks to the familiar AR15-style ergonomics is comfortable and natural to point at a target. The cheek-weld and head-height are both excellent for both Irons and Optics and can be further adjusted up or down using the 3-slot Picatinny Rail on the Rear of the Lower Receiver.

The Mk3’s action slides very smoothly on two steel Guide Rods nestled within the top of the Upper Receiver. Each of the Rods “guides” an Operating Spring, the combined force of which closes the Bolt Carrier forward against the Barrel Trunnion with the rotating Bolt locked into the Barrel Extension. The curved Bolt Carrier body is guided during its back and forth movement by the matching curved Receiver Walls. The Bolt is hardened Stainless Steel with a single Ejector and a standard AR15 Extractor. The Rotating Bolt is controlled by an AR15-style hardened Stainless Steel Cam which follows a slot in the Bolt Carrier to lock and unlock the rifle’s action. Over-pressure Proof rounds are fired as part of the pre-shipping Quality Control checks and inspections.

FIELD STRIPPING AND REASSEMBLY

Very much like its Mk2 predecessor, the R18 Mk3 readily strips down for basic field maintenance without the use of tools. The exception to this is access to the Gas System beneath the Handguard, which requires a 5mm and a 2.5mm Hex Wrench to remove the bottom Bolt and a top Retaining Screw respectively. Field stripping is very intuitive and the rifle has been designed in such a way that the working components can only be assembled in the correct sequence and position. New or inexperienced owners are encouraged to refer to the Owner’s Manual (to be issued on-line) for specific instructions and the recommended sequence of stripping and reassembling the Mk 3.

MAGAZINE COMPATABILITY

The following magazines were inserted into the Mk3 with an open Bolt to ensure proper fitment without over-travel. All magazines tested (less the ETS Gen2) dropped free when the Magazine Release was activated:

- Magpul PMag Gen 3 5/30
- Magpul PMag Gen 3 5/20
- Lancer AWM 5/30
- MFT "Pistol" 10/10
- ASC "Pistol" Mag 10/20
- ASC "Pistol" Mag 10/30
- Thermold CAF 5/30
- CAF Sterile/Generic Aluminum 5/30
- USGI Surefeed 5/30
- ETS Gen 2 5/30
- CZ Bren 2 5/30
- Surefire 5/60

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER ENHANCEMENT

It is recommended that SAI make the R18Mk3 as ambidextrous as possible, thereby catering to Left-handed firers at no additional expense to the purchaser. This can be accomplished inexpensively and relatively easily by:

  • Install a Norgon-style Ambidextrous Magazine Release
  • Install a Right Side Selector Lever
In addition to the above, it is recommended that SAI consider the following based on initial customer feedback:
  • Incorporate a Folding Charging Handle so that it lies flat against the rifle when folded.
  • Offer the Folding Buttstock adapter demonstrated in the ADKAS "SAM" video "The SIG MCX we have ar home" on YouTube as a standard feature.
  • Eliminate the small, Top Indexing Screw for the Handguard completely, but leave the Picatinny Indexing Tab. The screw is entirely superfluous and cannot be accessed when the rifle is fitted with magnified optics.
  • Revise the Handgusrd Takedown Bolt so that it is "Tool-Less". See the HK Hanguard Takedown Bolt for inspiration, wherein they use a Bolt Locking Lug in a recess to turn the Takedown Bolt's Head.
  • Reduce the diameter of the Barrel Nut to make it HK 416/MR223-compatible, including the Lockinig Bolt groove so that the Mk3 will accept HK Handguards as an option.
EXAMPLE BUILD

Below is an example of a utility build based on the R18 Mk3. The list of additions is detailed below:

CONCLUSION

The R18 Mk3 represents a significant leap forward for the design as well as the methods of manufacturing, assembling and inspecting the Sterling Arms International rifles prior to sale. The use of upgraded T7075 aluminum alloy, Stainless Steel for selected parts, and a Melonite-lined Chamber and Bore are all major advancements in the durability and longevity of the system, further enhancing the rifle’s value. With the latest enhancements and redesigns, the R18 Mk3 arguably represents not only the most advanced Canadian-manufactured Short-Stroke Piston rifle design currently on the market, but also the most cost-effective in terms of value for dollar. With the 33% reduction in MSRP from $2700 CAD to just $1800 CAD (initially), the Mk 3 also clearly provides the greatest value for the buyer’s precious dollar. My initial impressions based on handling the Mk3 and carefully examining the rifle’s component parts are highly favourable. Provided the new rifle delivers acceptable accuracy together with respectable reliability and reasonable durability, I believe that SAI has a serious contender with a winning combination of quality and affordable price on its hands. I predict a high degree of popularity for the R18 Mk3, as the principal competition for the Internal-Piston design of the Lockhart “Silver” Raven within the Canadian modern utility and sporting rifle market.

Part 2 - Shooting Impressions and Accuracy Results. Stay tuned for Part 2 of my Review once I get a chance to hit the range a few times for some accuracy and reliability testing. The Test Rifle that I have for the Part 1 Review cannot be fired due to a prototyping tolerance issue. That should be resolved within two weeks, with live-fire testing commencing shortly afterwards. Expect approximately 3 weeks (give or take) between Part 1 and Part 2 – Shooting Impressions and Accuracy Results.
I just had a question about not the bolt carrier but the bolt itself, with the bolt being “Hardened stainless steel” as opposed to other AR type bolts being made of 9310 steel for example, do you think having the R18MK3 bolt will be just as strong? I’m not a metallurgy expert haha! Thank you for your time and the “Preview”.

I don't honestly know how "Hardened Stainless" stacks up to the Carpenter Steel normally used in AR15 Bolts. I would assume that the Carpenter is the harder metal, but the question is how hard is hard enough for a rifle Bolt? I dunno - perhaps somebody with a better knowledge of metallurgy will chime in.....

Remember, harder = more brittle.
Stainless steel generally has a lower carbon content as an alloy steel compared to carbon steels.

9130 steel, also known as AISI E9310 alloy steel, is a low-carbon, nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel with a carbon content of 0.08–0.13%

Stainless steel has a low carbon content, typically less than 1.2% by mass:

304 stainless steel: Typically has a carbon content of around 0.08%
304H stainless steel: Has a higher carbon content of up to 0.1%
304L stainless steel: Has a lower carbon content of around 0.03%
316 stainless steel: Has a maximum carbon content of 0.08%
316L stainless steel: Has a maximum carbon content of only 0.03

As you can see, most stainless alloys are similar, if not lower, carbon content to 9130.
I'm sure whatever alloy they chose will be just fine.

As long as they're not using whatever pot metal is being used in the WK180 (i've had broken bolt lugs on my WSMCR), we should be fine.

That being said, hardening stainless can make it quite brittle, and it requires some savvy tempering to relieve tension and reduce the brittleness.

Just from the pictures, the finishing and sheen on the bolt/BCG looks promising, and looks to be way better than the shiddy wk180 bolt finish straight away. The firing pin safety on the BCG is a nice touch. Way to prevent out of battery detonations.

eek, missed that - stainless steel bolt? stainless is not as strong as steel (carbon, etc., as above). 'how' it is hardened is also a consideration - surface vs through. through is going to make it more brittle, but surface is going to retain some flex. regardless, either way don't expect a grendel, 6mm arc, or 7.62x39 version as that requires opening up the bolt face for the larger rim. i would NOT want stainless in that situation; even top-quality steel bolts are having issues with grendel and arc.

something else to consider is performance when hot/cold. typically when using a softer metal you compensate by using more of it (thicker, etc.) but in this case you are limited by the steel bolt extension. so, you are going to have dissimilar metals doing different things in the extreme cold and extreme hot. $ to donuts this is where the testing (and delay) is focusing. good for them.

if i recall correctly the original sterling used a softer aluminum for the receiver, made the receiver walls thicker to compensate, and then had tolerance stacking issues when the gun was really cold and there was too much dimensional change - why they went back to a harder aluminum? which they recognized and fixed. again, good for them.

Any updates RE. bolt replacements, live fire tests or potential launch dates on the R18?

Weighing up between this, crypto and Wk180 mk3. Was ideally waiting it out for this rifle, but will probably pick up one of the others unless Sterling are able to deliver a more realistic timeframe for release.

Kind of like waiting for the dangling carrot or just snacking on some tasty grass instead 🤷

Appreciate any insights!

You should wait at least until Dec 6th to see if these dipsh*ts push any further bans on us. Then would suggest considering Raven also. I absolutely love mine. Only complaint is a little wobble between upper and lower but there are ways to fix this (shims, wedges, foam ear pro, etc).

Patients Grasshopper! You will be sorry if you do not wait this one out.

I would not buy a WK180 MK3, I don't care what they changed.

Good things come to those who wait.

JR Cox has already rented secure and licensed retail space in Calgary in order to fulfill pre-booked Firearm Safety Courses and has stated his intent to also sell rifles from that location.
With TSE going bankrupt, hard to imagine people would be willing to engage in this new business that appears to be offering the same services.

With TSE going bankrupt, hard to imagine people would be willing to engage in this new business that appears to be offering the same services.
Just to be clear, since it is me that you have quoted, JR Cox has established a small facility in order to fulfill PRE-BOOKED Firearm Safety Courses. Emphasis on PRE-BOOKED. As in, programmed months in advance with pre-paid customers. Whether or not he goes on to program new FSCs after his existing obligations are satisfied is not my wheelhouse and I have no idea if the courses will continue.

He also apparently needed a location to store personal firearms and property belonging to former TSE club members with rental lockers. Those lockers had to be cleared out so that personal property would not get caught up in the bankruptcy proceedings. The new location gave JR Cox a licensed facility in which to store those firearms until arrangements could be made with owners for pickup.

And lastly, the new location is supposed to provide an outlet for physical Calgary sales of the R18 M3 and the R9, with online sales satisfied by SAI from their separate Calgary facility.

TSE was an indoor range with a retail store tacked onto it. There is no intention to open another indoor range, so the new "business" will not be offering anything like the old services. It's just a small retail outlet and a classroom facility, so is hardly the same as TSE was. If you want an R18 oor R9 in Calgary, it would be nice to have a place to look them over first. That is what he will provide in addition to the classes that he already owes folks scheduled well into the new year.

So we've all watched the announcement but list isn't here yet. I can bet Mk2 made it in the new list... What about Mk3? It's got FRT so good chance it's also on the list?

This is really boiling me up to a point I can make a cuppa out of it.

These bans will be reversed in a year from now. This year can be spent on testing and incorporating feedback. The barrel nut change was too much of a change for the announced timeline but can likely be accommodated in another extra year long schedule.. when AR platform is available again, competition will be the most severe.
