Thats a silly arguement my friend. Why are there so many SKS's, Norc's 1911, m-14s ect... on the market? Probably because many folks bought them because they were a great bargin (and still are). Not too long ago you could buy a brand new Stevens200 for $299. I bought 2 for that reason alone.
I bought one of the first XL7s when they came out. Very happy with it. Before getting it, I was about to buy a Stevens 200. Frankly, they are both good value for the money. Made to do the job and man.....they do the job well. ###y, they are not. For that, get a T3 or other girly rifles. These are working man's rifles!
The reason they are many Steves' in the market, is that tons of it was purchased by first time buyers or as "handy/second guns" and eventually, these newbies succumb to temptations of buying a flashier and more expensive rifle, even if it is not necessary. Understandable.
Marlin feels a bit more refined in appearance but to me the difference is negligible. Don't waste time pondering. Pick the one that is in hand or shoulders better, if you can try them, and get busy.
