Axis was my choice mainly because its what I already own... Haven't used a stevens. I am also getting a .223 this week.

I prefer a detachable magazine but I'd still be inclined to the Stevens because it's established and I don't really understand what the Axis is for - Savage still has the package rifles and the Stevens is theirs, so why this additional gun at the very low-price end of the market with it's weird looking stock which I suspect was designed with the brief "Make it look sort of different for the generation that lives for the newest cellphone every six months." ?

I guess I'm just old.

Personally, I think the Stevens is on the way out for exactly that reason - Savage has too many products competing in the same space. Already the Stevens in 7mm08 and 25-06 are gone, and no longer offered.

That could be because those two calibres just didn't sell well enough, which would be unsurprising given that they are most appealing to shooters who are more experienced? But it could be as you say - the Marlin X7 series is chasing the same market as the Stevens 200, and maybe Savage is thinking they don't need a separate brand for the low priced "entry level" model in their product range.

They Stevens 200 by the looks of things is a Savage Model 11 without an acutrigger. The Model 11 is in black synthetic the stevens in grey. The axis is a cheaper version still. I would personally go with the Stevens and then build it up by putting a acutrigger or other aftermarket trigger on it.

Thanks, guys.
I'm ordering the Stevens 200.
Good call! I think Savage is trying to phase out stevens by making the Axis. If there were a cheaper version of the axis made by stevens (not really possible) it would be worse than it already is with the savage branding.
The model 11 which the Stevens 200. Is based off of I believe is a way better gun than the Axis. The reason the stevens is cheaper is because of the blind Magazine and no acutrigger. Things that can be changed an upgraded later. The Axis is just plain cheaply made, poor tolerances, plastic mags, die cast parts etc. Its hard to upgrade ####.

I've had a couple of Stevens now.

If I was considering the choice, I'd go for another Stevens.

NAA.

I have a Savage Axis 22-250 and it's certainly accurate. Functions well. Trigger is crap but after a bit of a fix cutting a coil off the spring, it's somewhat less crap. Overall pretty decent rifle for $300

I have both and I love the Stevens. I like the fact that you can find aftermarket parts for the Stevens. The Axis is very good, but the stock is not great, and no aftermarket stocks on the market.
