it also has no recoil lug, like the stevens. It's got a slot in the action that mates with a piece of metal embedded in the stock - the way a Tikka T3 is set up.

It looks like it has the same barrel nut assembly as a Savage 110, so it may be possible to install one of those washer-style recoil lugs, and then fit it into a stock that's been partially inletted for a 110, with a little work and maybe some Devcron

I've no experience with the Axis, but I've got two Stevens 200's and for a few bucks more they have a host of aftermarket accessories available. They also shoot very well right out of the box.

I was looking at both, and may just go for the axis combo. Not something I'm going to dish out money on upgrading, but more as something to start out hunting coyotes myself. Looks like a good shooter, and out of the box for about 350 with scope sounds quite nice to my ears. Couple years down the road I'll be ready to spend for a nice safe queen shooter/project rifle.

Mike.

I recently bought a Savage Axis .223 for coyotes and it seems to be a well made and great shooting gun-the price is right on them aswell. Just purchased another in .270 for next deer season.

My Axis in .223 is deadly accurate. I cleaned up the trigger myself (my first trigger modification) and it was easy! It shoots factory cheap stuff right around an inch at 100m and my first set of handloads dropped that to half an inch or less. Great gun for cheap!

You can also buy Savage 11's in pkgs with removeable mags. That would be my choice. I bought that model in 243 and then bought a bolt head and a 223 barrel for $100 for my varmint hunting needs. I replaced the trigger spring with lighter piano wire and voila.... nice shooter that I can carry all day.

There is a lot of options.
I'd concider the Stevens also and make it a single shot if I didn't like the blind mag.

Just picked up a stevens 200 in .243 as my first rifle. It sure as hell shoots a whole lot better than I do.

I had the choice between the axis or the stevens, and chose the stevens due to the wide range of aftermarket products. It shoots fine for me right now but I like the thought that down the road I can easily replace the trigger and stock. Thats what sold it for me.

Well, so far I like my Axis in 223. Except the stock. But that I am taking care of. Not done yet. I will also install another barrel on it.

Now that you turned it into a single, you rigged it so it is easier to chamber a single round? Fill me in please...

In its original form it is a horrible/hateful rig...

Looks good...Wouldn't mind playing with that...I think you have it figured out....

I sighted an Axis 223 in for a friend eary this fall...As much as I enjoyed the accuracy, I hated how hard it was to load singles X10....

What Scope do you have on it?

A el-cheapo Vector, 4-14 x 50, costed me 120$ shipped. I wanted the reticle, this way I don't need to play with the turret a lot. Found out when I tested it that one line is 1 MOA, so I hold accordingly.

I am waiting for a new (to me) barrel out of a Model 12 VLP with a 1:7 twist to swap the Axis barrel. This way I'll have a cheap and funny built that will be ok for long range shooting, without breaking the bank.

Rifle 300$
Scope 120$
Barrel 175$
20 MOA base (not yet bought) +-50$
Reloading dies (used) 20$

If you are comparing the Axis package (with scope) for about $330 to the Stevens for about $350, I would say the Stevens is better value. The stock is more solid, if you go with a .223 or .243 you will get a short action vs. the Axis generic long action. Aftermarket stocks are available for the Stevens but not the Axis, and the package scope is not very good. Either should shoot well.
