i knew i wanted to shoot 150 grain before i got started so i bassed my powder choice off the data that comes with the dies.

This all gets me by for now and i have it figured out to about 70 cents a shot depending on what bullet i use.

Of course youll need to get .223 stuff witch i dont have part numbers for.
but start like i di write a list with prices if you want. i skipped putting prices down when i did mine. but the most expensive thing so far was probably the press witch was under 40 bucks.

All the stuff i use is lee like the link i shared but alot of people here are gunna say to go rcbs. this got me started though and i can upgrade from here.

I also got a reloading book, it was about 40 bucks to but deffanatly worth it

Thanks

Dave

Oh yes, and upgrade you will my friend :p That is half the fun of this whole game. I started out like you with the basic Lee setup, its great stuff, I still use a lot of it.

Just a side note, I got a real cheap electronic scale off ebay for like 18 bucks, and it actually works well.. I didn't trust it at first, but I always test it and its bang on.

I have to set a monthly budget for myself because all those little bits and pieces add up so much its just scary. And when you enter the world of good optics it gets really scary

OP DAVE. plz dear god get your self a real scale. And a bullet comparator.

And it's a base not a mount.

Precision shooting is a great sport. You can't always go cheep tho. You will just get mad at ur results and give up after you see how bad your gona do on papper .
Keep ur Stevens. That project, use a better action. Your about to own a farrari with economy Toyota corolla engine.

Are you saying that the stevens (Savage) Action he is starting with is a piece of Junk?
Maybe somebody needs to tell Jerry that if he's using a piece of junk shooting to one mile with a 223, and all those f class shoots he goes in and does very well, same thing. Imagine what he could do with a real rifle then. LOL

I wish I could afford to own a Corolla. Instead I bought an Elantra. From what I've seen and read the Stevens is an excellent introduction rifle at a good price. It won't let me down as I won't demand very much of it until I get better at shooting.

I look forward to this rifle very much. And as for Mystic's 1000yd shots. Holy s***. Maybe one day I can shoot half of that distance. Or even a quarter.

Ya full out I'll say the Stevens rifle is a pos, Because it is.

The action is the best part. But even still compared to what you could use it's the bottom of the pot.

Mystic is an experienced smith and shooter.

Really? So what work/smithing/$$$ does it take to get a 700 shooting superbly?

Stevens/Savage => barrel, trigger and bedding. All of which you can install/do yourself with little trouble.

I am looking at a Savage action as the base for a semi custom varmint rifle. Right now am trying to get the Savage Accustock chassis/insert to install into a laminated wood stock. Worst case is that I buy a complete Savage with the Accustock and remove the steel/aluminum bedding bloc and re-install it into my laminated stock. Total for that gun with Accustock is $600, then add a barrel, $450 for a Shilen SS Match Select, which is prechambered/threaded and just needs to be screwed on, and a stock $200, plus a day of my own labour.......

Please, price out a top performer using any other action.

The 200 in .308 was my first rifle, when I found out it is a Pre Accu trigger Mod. 11 I though Fantastic! Went and brought a boyds thumbhole stock for it, upgraded my optics to a BSA Platnium 8-32x44 Illuminated Mil-Dot.

Regrettably I traded it about a year ago, I miss it terribly. It was deadly accurate out to 350 yards, furthest I could shoot at the range. It was a fantastic bench rifle and a deadly big game rifle, took numerous Caribou & Moose with it

Compared to a stevens 200 ? just ammo.

Look Dave. OP. The stevens 200 action works.... Just with the gun your building its the weak link.

You would be smarter to invest in a actual action and just shoot your Stevens 200 as it is untill your gun is done. maby practice bedding with it.

Lets look at it like this in a price brake down.

Lug - $30
Knob - $80
Rail - $120
Trueing - $250
Action - $600 ------- the rough cost of ur gun.
----------------------
Final - $1080

Cost of a custom action. ( Custom actions require no work )

Stiller Precision - $750

PIERCE Engineering - $885

Even a savage target action, $450.

A top notch action goes for about $1000.

By using ur Stevens 200 action all your really doing is throwing an entire gun away only to have a less quality action.

It would be smarter $$ wise to keep your stevens as it is.

Custom actions are built stronger, have better lugs with more surface area and tighter all around tolerances. Things you cant even do to your stock stevens action.

You might want to go window shopping and get your facts and pricing straight before posting a bunch of useless info like that. :slap:

Stevens actions don't need to be tuned due to the floating bolt head, a 200 rifle new goes for 360.oo barrel resales for 100 give or take on the EE and the stock another 50, so the action costs just over 200 bucks, stocks are from 100 to 400 depending on what style of shooting your going for. You don't need a rail on a stevens build, trigger 160.oo, lug 20.oo and a bolt handle less then 50.oo and 420 for a barrel

I figure thats what like 900 to 1300 package cost and shooting at the range, your custom action still needs a 400.oo stock plus a 400.oo barrel, so your already beyond the build costs with no trigger or barrel.

Quite a bit off on the price there. Stevens/Savage actions don't need truing, and the cost of an entire Stevens rifle is $350. (see Ellwood Epps sponsor at top of page)

The $600 I was referring to was a Savage with the complete aluminum/steel bedding block/chassis.

Plus, you can get $100 by selling the take off barrel and stock if you don't use it.

EDIT: yodave beat me to it......

Custom actions are built stronger, have better lugs with more surface area and tighter all around tolerances. Things you cant even do to your stock stevens action.

When you get right down to basics, it doesn't matter one bit how "strong" or "better lugs", or "tighter tolerances" etc, all that matters is how well it shoots. And the Savage actions can shoot right up there with the best (most expensive) of them......
