Stevens O/U

Wish I had seen this thread earlier, we use a Stevens 512 in 20 gauge as a club gun at the Pheasantry. They are GARBAGE, both firing pins have gone kaput, we ended up having two new ones made, apparently the stock ones are too soft and warp and then shatter. The gun just went to the smith again, it won't close properly and if it does close it will spring open after firing. The only redeeming feature is that I shoot it extremely well. The gun was one of the first imported and I believe it cost 530$ at the time.

Yes, I personally know a couple of people with them and would confirm the mechanical problems noted above... I would recommend looking at something used (semi or O/U from a major manufacturer) if cost is an issue...

I bought a 512 in 20ga in May of this year. So far I am quite happy with it. I use for what most people do, small game and occasional skeet.

I have not had any of the problems so far. The problems listed above may be due the first batches made. The one problem I have had is it overheating and being unable to open the action.

Despite recommending it for occasional shooting, hindsight I would have bought a used 'B' gun.

Has anyone owned a CZ (i.e. The Woodcock)? I wonder how it compares to Stevens, stoeger, etc. as it isn't tons more. Any site sponsors have them listed?

For sooo long, I too wanted an O/U 12....had to be single selective trigger, preferrably a full over mod or w/chokes....2 3/4" or 3"..didn't much matter as I reload..I couldn't annnd CAN't afford one of the 1500 to 3000 dollar guns, so,2 years ago, I did a lot of searches and checking things out . My budget was 600..I know, it's not much, but, thats was it!!...The reviews told me that the 512 Stevens was out...I handled a stoeger...more like a 2x6 with a barrel on it..tried out a Baikal..wasn't bad but I couldn't find the options I wanted..Loved the new Mossberg Silver Reserve...Beautiful actually....BUT, the one I wanted sold too fast...THEN, I hear that the early on models had some firing pin problems..grrrr..read some reviews on different sites....kept hearing the name Lanber....good Spanish gun.....Lanber...Beauty and tough too....nice/ well made for the money.....so I found one, it had...S/S Trigger...F/M barrels....Wide rib...nickle reciever.....extractors..it was used a bit upland hunting...had some wood issues, dings and marks on it...2 little dings on the bluing..other than that...very good..I got it for 525.00 shipped!!...I tru-oiled the stock...polished the bores, added a hi-viz sight....Mannnn...I LOVE IT!! It's a great gun...no probs what so ever. I use it for rabbits, upland birds and sporting clays and for just playing around clays and skeet!! Great bang for the buck!!..Best of luck in whatever you decide to go with!!...Kevin
