The AUG as used by Australia using the M16 mag is a great rifle. Modern versions can be equipped with a 1913 rail so any sighting system can be used. I have never used the long barrel with bi-pod, now that would have been interesting. I will stick my neck out and say that I would pick the AUG before that grossly overrated M4! Now that should insure some follow ups!
The Australians use Steyr mags which are incompatible with AR mags. Well except for their SAS who use M4A1s.

Many AUGs were confiscated, as they were originally prohib without grandfathering, then "they" changed "their" minds after the Hasselwander case and created a grandfathering class for it. That did not happen quickly enough for everyone who owned one. Lots of folks had $2800 (1990's dollars) rifles confiscated without compensation. It's definitely the smallest prohib class.
The RCMP will probably say that the A1 internals can be swapped into the A3 receiver no?
From what I understand it's been quite extensively modified. Only one way to find out: import one.
