Hey Guys.

I always felt this line of pistols is forgotten and vastly underrated. Or completely ignored.
Any thoughts or feedback with experience preferably.

Cheers.

I have the L9A1. Very comfortable, excellent ergonomics, extremely accurate, but I’ve been plagued with extractor issues. They had a huge batch of faulty extractors that were incorrectly heat treated. They’d chip apart in a few hundred rounds. Free replacements are available to Americans, but they won’t ship them to Canada. I’m awaiting delivery of my third extractor, and hopefully it lasts. They also don’t all come with the trapezoid sights. Mine didn’t come with them. I’ve shot ones with the trapezoid sights, and they are awesome! Magazines are expensive, and holsters are hard to find. Solely Canadian made me a holster though and it’s perfect.

Hmm. You know anyone that is bringing them in.

I bought one this year (actually 2018) during a sale. They were out of the trapezoid sights so a free upgrade to the night sights. For the $500 range it was a great deal. Shoots as well as the current Glock 19x etc. the trigger is isn’t as good as the PPQ but it’s pretty good in the latest ones. The grip angle is a bit odd but it works fine. Also the pistol grip is a bit slick compared to current polymer Stryker fires pistols. I like it and the few times I’ve shot it, I have had 100 percent reliability.

Reliability with the early ones killed their reputation. Otherwise these would have been much more popular.

For the sale price it’s a good deal. However in the $700 range you have more options that are a bit more modern. The cz p10c right now at $540 is however likely a much better buy. I just ordered one so I can’t compare yet with real life firing. However by all accounts that is the Best Buy right now. Which once again puts the Styr to a less known option.

I do like it and agree it’s under rated. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it compared to top of the line current striker fired polymer guns while available at mid range pricing. Again this is likely due to the horrible reliability of the early imports.

Honestly they are just ok. But there’s not a significant enough improvement over something like a Glock in my opinion to warrant less options for holsters/aftermarket options. Not a big fan of trigger reset either. Mine was 100% reliable though!

They are gaining momentum south of the border.
I was going to import an M9A1 with a threaded barrel through Irunguns but I just couldn't pass up the CZ P10C at the price Tenda was selling them for.

I should add that my L9A1 was at the $500 price point. It was a really good sale. At the current $700 ish price point I would opt for a Walther ppq M2 or M1 Navy over the Styr. I’ve bought PPQ pistols at the $700 price point. Right now the CZ P10C is on sale at $540. At the $500 range the Styr was a great choice only beaten by the recent CZ P10C sale.

The Glock gen 5 or 19X are also very good pistols but at the $800 price point. The only negative with my G19x is that the Shield version comes with stock Glock sights. I really don’t like them. The regular $805 G19x comes with night sights. I’m assuming those sights don’t suck hard like the standard Glock sight.

The best value is often changing depending on sales and popularity. The Styr gets a thumbs up. However watch out with old ones due to brutal reliability problems and find one on a really good sale. At the $780 range there are a lot of other options that I would buy before the Styr. Unfortunately the OP’s question isn’t easy to answer due to changing prices, current reliability vs previous train wreck reliability and other competitive options.

Yeah I like the Glock 19x option and The Walther PPQ as well. But I like the Steyr M9A1 version but with the OD color. I was looking at iron guns. Because Ellwood Epps only has the Steyr L9-A1 (NIGHT SIGHTS)version. Anyways all have too see. M9 A1 comes in at 4 inch barrel so it might have be L9. How does your L9 handle a light(Surefire)x300 model or whatever ?

I've never tried a light on the L9A1. It was pretty well lit at the indoor range I shot it at :) . All joking aside, that is a good question. Unfortunately I haven't tried it.

It's in good company and not out classed.

I have had a M40A1 for a number of years and briefly had a L9A1. The M40A1 has the trapezoid sights and I LOVE them. I find them VERY fast and accurate for IDPA competition. I sold the L9A1 right after I bought it as it came with night sights, and I expressly wanted the traps. Yes, mags and holsters are a pain to acquire...

I dry fired the HECK out of my M40A1 to smooth the trigger and reset out. It is nice now. It is my go-to .40 shooter, but mostly rides the pine in favour of my 9mm PPQ due to ammo cost.

Too bad they were shaky at launch, because I think they are a quality polymer pistol... Certainly not as refined as a PPQ, but matches up well with the rest.
