Steyr SSG

As jjohn said - 20 years ago it was hot stuff compared to anything else around but as I recall the PII I had was not exceptional. If you're after a collector item then OK. If you just want the best accuracy for the money then I think it might be over priced compared to what you can get today. IMHO

Not to highjack the thread but it looks like some CGN members are looking for Steyr Mannlicher SSG69 rifles. Fine, because I am looking too. In fact, I have been waiting for quite a while to buy a new SSG P11 rifle. Reason : none available. Can a dealer order one from the - only - distributor in Canada ? Answer : maybe. Is the - only - distributor willing to order one from the Company ? That, I don't know.
During the last ten months, I have contacted three dealers to get that rifle. One wasn't obviously interested and the other two are still working on it. In all honesty, I must say that I have not put any pressure on them. Do we have to pester them, really ?
I will skip the details.
Back to the topic. More than twenty years ago, I have watched #### de Jong (Canadian Pistol Institute, New Brunswick) put a bunch of bullets inside six inches at six hundred yards (Gagetown) with a Steyr SSG69 - and with a fixed power Austrian scope, 6X or 8X, IIRC. It was the first time I was meeting a Steyr SSG69. Did not forget it, no. That rifle is only a "factory rifle", after all.
BTW, I would like to know, from all the Steyr SSG69 lovers out there, what scope they would choose for that specific rifle (brand, magnification, fixed power or variable, reticule, etc). Caliber .308 Winchester, of course.

Voilà !

Snowy Owl, Italian Sproting Goods in Vancouver can get them. They had a P1 in stock several months ago, and were very willing to place an order for a P2 for me. They priced it out and called the distributor for me and said, at that time, delivery would be about 4 weeks. If you're really interested, give them a call.

Wolverine had one a while ago. Just call every single sponsor.

Skippy 809,

What a coincidence ! I was going to call Italian Sporting Goods because they are a Talley Rings dealer in Canada and Talley makes riflescope mounts for the Steyr SSG ... Many thanks for the tip. AFAIK, Italian Sporting Goods also sells Kahles scopes. Well then ...

M995 Swiss,

The dealer that wasn't very interested in ordering a Steyr SSG P11 is a CGN sponsor. One of the other two dealers still working on it is also a CGN sponsor. In all fairness, I have to wait a bit more but I will not wait forever. Now, I think that I have a pretty good idea of what I am going to do. Many thanks too.

Found a mag for it at gunshow.

Diopter,

So you found a ten round magazine for your Steyr SSG P11 rifle. Well, good for you. Never seen one in the flesh. Mean looking and very nice. Some rifle to be sure.
I just read my last posting where I wrote that I have seen #### de Jong shooting a Steyr SSG many years ago (the rifle was a P1). I should add some more details. Range: 600 yards, improvised semi-prone position on a small slope, no sling, no bipod, no rest, no sand bags). Now, #### is no slouch with a rifle but he would be, knowing him, the first to concede that the rifle was not exactly your average boomstick.
A Steyr SSG 69 is not a rifle to be used for competing in F-Class but then it doesn't weigh 17-22 pounds neither. You can still carry it a long way and the barrel will have a useful life - in .308 Winchester caliber - far exceeding the life of the some of the ruling calibers (chamberings) in F-Class.

The SSG 69 is a good practical rifle.

I owned an Israeli Army surplus SSG 69 with the Kahles 6X scope. I purchased the combination in the late 80's for $650. It was an abosolute joy to shoot, and a tack driver. It came to Canada at the same time as the surplus M14's.

Standard green cycolac stock, with the quick detach rings and three mags. It was a really nice rifle, but in a fit of poverty and apparantly a weak mind, I sold it.

Why, oh why wasn't I buying guns in my late teen years instead of chasing tail and drinking beer? To think of all those guns and deals I missed out on! Sigh.... $650 SSGs! FN-FALs, TRW M-14s, Galils, AKs....epic fail!:(

Koshy,

Again, congratulations for your Steyr SSG-08 rifle. That is some rifle ...

It's "only a factory rifle" but maybe it could give some custom F-Class (FTR) rifles a good run for their money. Don't know. Maybe, I say.

Looking forward to the (long) range report.
