Guys, I’m on the verge of buying a Steyr SSG08 A1.
Before I drop $10k on it, is there anyone on here that owns one or handled one?

Any feedback would be appreciated

Thanks

Much appreciated, which AI in 308 would you recommend?

AT 308 if you are buying new. or if you find a good deal on the ee the aw or ae mkIII. I have an ae mkIII and I love it.

That steyr is a deeply impressive rifle but I have a hard time not recommending an AI.

I have a Steyr SSG69 PII and a Steyr M300 CISM ... I am pretty sure of the option between an SSG 08 and an AI AT (or AXMC) ... I would select the AI AT as well. I look at all the ones that come up for sale (few as they are) .. But I dont think that I would divest of the SSG 69 -- it is a lighter (and for me more useful) format with potential that can VERY closely approach the other options ... maybe exceed them if the operator is having a good day.

The Steyr Scout Tactical Elite is a nice rifle too, and for a lot less money than the SSG08. A very accurate rifle that can hold its own at long distances but seems to fly below the radar.

Yes sir, I have one with the stainless barrel, an unbelievably nice rifle, and a true tack driver.

Do you understand that in SSG08 A1 you are paying like $7k just for the chassis?

Why would you do that if you can get Cadex rifle for half the price?

Umm, Cadex barrels are not CHF with the signature swirls. They also do not make their own barrels. Cadex doesn't test & guarantee their barrels last 10k rounds like Steyr does.

And also the history thing... Steyr knows a thing or two how to build proper rifles.

And also that Steyr will do a group like this or better at 300m.

AI you see them all the time, but Styer SSG08A1 ohh

You can take, let’s say 10 AI’s of the same make and caliber, take them all apart, put the parts in a big bag, give a shake, dump parts on the floor and assemble in no particular order. Viola all the guns will be with-in spec. Try that with other makes. You can’t. On another note I owned a SSG PII .308 with a some 5 rounders and 10 round mags. Gun shot lights out. I didn’t like the plastic trigger guard, it broke and the stock had a hairline crack. I guess I could of bought a McMillian stock for it and an aftermarket mag housing but they cost more than I paid for the gun.

Did you shoot that group yourself? At 300? By "Like this or better" you mean anyone you know can shoot "like this" any time, never been worse and by "better" you mean like how much better? .1MOA?

I do kinda get that some people are very attached to brand they happen to choose. But, hammer forged steyr barrel is worse than single cut stainless custom barrels. Proof? - Not a single factory steyr competes and wins against custom rifles. If Steyrs are so good why bother with Bartlein etc? Or all these ppl who spend half of their lives competing never saw Steyrs, just happen to be.

SSG 08 is practically Pro Hunter with a different profile barrel and chasis. A1 is just a variation on a 08 chassis. At $10k it is nuts.

Surgeon 591
Hawk Hills MTU Barrel
Jewel Trigger
Cadex Light Comp. Chassis
Heathen Brake
Cerakote – FDE

$6299, custom build or SSG08 A1, factory build, $10k. You gotta love marketing, it makes wonders.

Those are my groups. I say or better because the rifle shoots better than me.

HS50, completely stock.

Wilkinson’s HS-50 is equipped with a Nightforce 5.5-22x56mm NXS scope and Steyr’s standard, state-of-the-art, CNC-machined, folding bipod. So equipped, the rifle weighs in at just about 30 pounds in a class with a 50-pound limit. Personally, I think that Hunter Class rifles should be limited to 30 to 35 pounds, as this is what hunting and tactical rifles weigh. Installing a bipod on a Heavy Class rifle and making it a Hunter Class rifle is an oxymoron. Hunter Class should be limited, in my humble opinion, to Light Class gun weights (32 pounds) so the essence of the Hunter Class, as a class you can shoot with an out-of-the-box rifle, is maintained. This adds value to Wilkinson’s win, as many of his competitors shot rifles much heavier than his and with custom barrels, actions and chambers. Winning with a sniper rifle with a standard chamber is an awesome challenge.
