Can someone with access to either an STG44 or BD44 pls check something for me?

I have acquired a BD44 reproduction of an MP44/STG44, but it is missing the highlighted pin from the trigger group:

Can someone pls check their gun and let me know what this pin is supposed to do? On my example, the trigger group seems to work just fine despite this pin not being in place, so I'm assuming it retains something to do with the F/A firing mechanism (maybe retains an auto-sear or similar). When manufactured, this SSD gun did have a pin there (holes remain) but it must have fallen out somewhere along the way.

I need to know if I am OK to just fab up a cosmetic pin and press it in place, or if it is supposed to retain something that actually has a legitimate function in the semi-auto version of the fire control group.

Maybe someone with a BD44 that has this pin can tell me if anything is mounted to it, or if SSD just added it for cosmetic reasons because real STG44's had a pin there.

Thanks!

In my copy of the original StG44 blueprints, that pin is just labeled "Haltebolzen" (retaining pin)... not much help there...

I took apart the lower receiver of a BD44 recently to replace the disconnector retaining pin which fell out, but I cant remember seeing your specified pin holding anything of interest, but it most likely has something to do with the safety perhaps? I can check later on today if someone else doesn't beat me to it. ;)

The fit of some of the pins on the SSD rifles leaves something to be desired. Not to mention the whole BD38 BS... Sighhh... :(

It does not seem to affect the functioning of the safety. On my example, at least, with the pin missing the safety still works. In fact, I can't find anything that does NOT work wit hthe pin missing, which is why I assume it had something to do with the full-auto workings of the originals.

I suppose it could also act as a trigger over-travel limiter?

No idea how mine shoots - still sorting out a few minor issues with my gun before taking her out for a run.

Claven,

I am not sure if these photos will be helpful.
Two different MP44s....one CA the other dewatt.
I can't comment on the particular piece that you are concerned about.

Is there a protrusion on the selector that hits that pin to stop the selector from travelling past it's intended range of motion? - I know someone who has an Stg, I'll ask him this weekend.

Hi Ron.
To the best of my knowledge. It is there just to reinforce the trigger mech housing. Since it is only made of stamped sheet metal, it would require to be reinforced.
Hope that this sheds some light.

Claven2.

That pin is a simple flared pin, and it does serve a function. It limits the rearward travel of the trigger. I checked out one thoroughly this morning. Whether or not this is actually a necessary part to prevent over travel of the trigger bar/sear - disconnector so that it doesn't bind bolt movement is another question altogether... Perhaps try holding your trigger back all the way while racking the bolt and see if it creates any problems.

While you are at it, you might consider checking the fit of the pin that holds the disconnector in there. Had one fall out and had to make a new one, also talked to other guys in the US that ran into similar problems.

Also, have you had any other malfunctions or breaks? Lots of cracked and broken bolts etc in the US with the PTR44, but I'd like to know if that's just a 922r compliance issue or an overall SSD issue.

Cheers!

Well, I personally have not shot mine yet. I've only had it a week or so. The first one I got, I sent back because the locking block inside the trunion forging was cracked. The dealer replaced the whole gun with this one. While it's a "new gun", it clearly has been shot a bit. I suspect either SSD tested it for a few mags, or possibly the dealer tried it out some. It was full of burnt powder residue, lots of brass on the bolt and extractor, lots of evidence of the front sight having been adjusted, hood removed multiple times, etc. but it's in good working order and in nice condition cosmetically.

It's reasonably well made considering the low production volume, but came to me with other minor issues:

- Missing the pin
- It also has some "hand fitting" on the bolt, up by the extractor, done AFTER the bolt was blued, tough the dealer tells me this is typical of the SSD product.
- The receiver had some odd bends in it up by the cocking handle. Not too bad and doesn't interfere with function.
- Front sight was loose in the dovetail, but that was easy to tighten up.
- Hammer spring was fouling the hammer, fixed it by tweaking the right spring arm so it would clear.

Does your rear sight lock into position at 100m? Mine locks in at every setting except 100. I suspect I'll have to tweak it.

In terms of changes, I'm adding an original handguard. Originals, I have heard, fit much better, don't bend as easily, and are a little longer than the SSD ones. I'm also fitting a WW2 laminate stock (you need original hardware, only the socket can be re-used), and I'm putting on WW2 bakelite grips, though I've had to make a new screw set in the lathe.

All that to say, I'm keeping this one since it was better than the first and I DO want one of these pattern guns since I doubt any more will ever come in.

I've been hunting for an original bolt and op rod to have as spares. As you mention, they have a high failure rate in the USA so I think it will be smart to have spares. I've not seen a broken bolt yet, but the op rods tend to have the "eras" break off. There was a run at SSD with bad heat treatment (too hard). I have no idea if the Canadian guns are affected, or just the PTR guns? But the op rods were not 922r replacements. they used the SSD part. I *think* Recon Ord put new USA-made bolts in the guns though.

OK, had some success :) Made a new pin in the lathe and after making a jig, got it flared into place in the arbor press. Works great now :) I also figured out the rear sight issue, the notch for the 100m setting was slightly too narrow. I opened it up a few thou with a small file and it now works great as well. Short of actually firing it, I now think it will be fully functional. Just have to get to the range. Can't wait :)

I do have a couple hundred PRIVI factory rounds in the vault ;)
