I'm having a really hard time reloading for this gun. My brass easily fit the chamber when I resize them. But for some reason 1 out of 3 loaded rounds don't fit all they way in. I've used 180 g campo and Ares at 1.185, 1.175. The brass isn't bulged at the base. I load longer because I'm using n320 as I've always done when I was shooting an SV. Any help would be appreciated as I have a match next weekend

Cheers

UPDATE

After further investigation, It seems some of my bullets are not loading straight into the case. The OAL length and chamber are not the problem. I'm running a Dillon 650 with Dillon Carbide dies. So if anybody knows why the happening, I'd appreciate the help.

Cheers

Do you resize the brass full length? Shouldn't be the bullets

Why type of crimp are you using?

Pull the barrel, and chamber check your reloads.

Nope, bullets are fine. The only thing I can think of is the finished round not being perfectly concentric. But then again I've run 1000's of the rounds in other pistols without a problem

Sounds like your reloads are engaging rifling with those projectiles prematurely.
Blacken the offending projectile with a marker and then shove that round it in the chamber. (With the barrel removed)
See if there is any marks on the projectile - if so - yep - engaging rifling - shorten that particular bullet combo up & repeat.

Campro makes 3 kinds of 180s - Round nose will engage rifling before truncated cone with the same OAL; Different Ogives on bullets play a part in the OAL you choose when you are playing with longer than spec. rounds.

Also, since 40 is a straight wall rimless case, you should be able to drop offending rounds in backwards and confirm they are sized properly at the base.

I'm using TC type bullets and have blackened the tips. No visible mark. I'm afraid of getting into high pressure problems by loading much shorter.

Anybody have a recipe for N320 loaded shorter? I'm using 5.1g and VV don't list a lot of loads for 180g and N320.

Thanks

I had the same problem with mine when I was shooting standard division. Mine needed the chamber reamed out. After I had that done, it would cycle anything long or short.

Op, is your Edge new, because a lot of Edges from the factory has this problem, the good news is its has a quick fix, Free bore and a little polishing of the chamber, and the the angle of your feed ramp.

It's not new. I would like more info on your fix. Specifics

From the VihtaVouri website, they recommend an overall length of 1.126" for all of their .40 S&W loads.

http://www.vihtavuori.com/en/reloading-data/handgun-reloading/-40-s-w.html

SAAMI spec for .40 S&W is 1.085" - 1.135"

Could the OAL of your rounds possibly be causing you the problem?

That is SAAMI. The way I was explained was that you can use faster burning powder than normal if you load longer. Faster burning powder has less recoil but creates higher pressure. You can only do that with a fully supported chamber in some pistols designed for competition( STI - SVI 2011s) with mags capable of taking the longer rounds. For example one GM I know was using Clays with a 1.225 OAL.

OP, 14 yrs ago 1.135 was the OAL when I was shooting Glock 35 with 4.6gr of N320 with a Barsto bbl ( fully supported). When I switched to Edge 40 with a 10mm mags my OAL was 1.20 with a powder charge somewhere 5.2gr. . Same as yours Edge mine was not fully reliable from the box even with a factory ammo., ocassionally I got a 12oclock feeding problem, tried all different OAL from 1.135 to 1.200 with no avail. I finally decided to bring my gun to Roger Kotanko with my sample ammo for a freebore, he also cleaned/polished the chambers and reangle the feedramp a little bit which took him only 20 minutes to do it.

I have a feeling that the STI chamber is a little tighter that it should.
It sounds like the STI Chamber is the correct spec; the one Hoag mentions.
You are hot-rodding ammo beyond spec. No-one makes chambers for custom loads.
You don't blame Ford when your homemade gas doesn't work in it.

Your solution is simple; stop making your custom ammo so long. N320 is a popular powder with 180s in 40 cal STI Standard guns; it would appear everyone else is loading their rounds shorter than you. (I did!) Pick a workable length, back off the powder charge and work up a load using accepted reloading / load development practices.

I would like to mention that I've been running this load for a couple years in a SVI. Never had any trouble whatsoever. I just came back to shooting standard from prod this month. Decided I would get an STI instead because SV have gone mental on their pricing. I'm not blaming STI for anything, I'm just trying to figure out why my favourite load that has worked so well in my SV is giving me so much trouble in a STI.

Now I will call Josko Monday morning as I value his opinion and will go from there.

Thanks everybody for your input
