Still No action-Whitetail.

I have been here for many many years, Some are envious of the spot I have.In years past the deer traffic has been wonderful, just something seems to be up this year, the heat, timing of harvest, water accumulation, coyotes or a combination of everything. just have never put in so much time and effort and had such little results. And I am doing everything, decoy, bait, camera, calling, scenting.

Maybe the stars , moon, planets did something . Hopefully it does pick up this weekend, I enjoy being close to town and not having to travel hours away.

I've been hunting around PA since the beginning of bow season. There are deer moving. They tend to be moving in the open in the mornings. For the evening hunt hunt they don't move till the last 30 minutes before legal shooting. This saturday the scrapes are starting to show up but no rubbing on the trees yet. I tend to set up a few hundred yards back in the treeline behind fields showing feeding activity. I've seen deer almost every time out but no wall hangers yet just a couple of spikers and a not too bad 3X3.

One in the freezer for us so far and am hoping for some good horns once the rut starts. Good luck there are deer around you'll get your chance soon. There has been a definite increase in deer traffic in the last two weeks. Try a decoy it has worked for me a few times even with does. Try sitting on stand from about noon to about 3 if you are in the deep bush. They will move around in cover that time of day. If it is really windy stay home because they'll just sit tight in the really thick stuff and your only chance is to push them if you've got a couple of buddies.

Well...................now it makes perfect sense!! :p

But I am banking on the hypothesis that the "one" will show up for me this year.

We can read the synopsis in Sask. too. There is something in there about antlerless tags and regular tags. If my fading old memory serves me right.

Where I usually hunt in ontario there were about 7 or 8 does that hung around eating all the corn that was put out. Week before hunting season opened up they all left and there are just woloves hanging around now, not happy! they have been gone for almost a month now, no sign of them.

I got out yesterday for the first time this year :)(crossbow) and I was in my stand and ready to shoot at 4:00pm and at 4:15pm I had 3 whitetail within 50 yds. I saw 2 of them clearly both does and the third I could only pick out the brown body moving in the thick. They came from behind my stand of course down wind of me and smelt me then buggered off the way they came. Only have a buck tag anyway :(. Good start though to see 3 within the first 15 mins of being on stand :).......hopefully I'll get my buck. Good luck all.

Well went out tonight after work to take a look around and retrieve the pictures off the trail cam. 350+ images since Sunday, only 5 were of daylight movement of a single year and a half buck(I saw his change purse in one of the pics If you ask how I know, lol) On the return home after legal time the movement was just starting.Temperatures still haven't dropped like we need but hopefully soon. Not really interested in being out there when Rambo(rifle) season starts.

Amen brother. Last year I could set my watch to when the road riflemen began their patrol. If you stick to the archery zone around PA you might get lucky and avoid them. ( I've seen quite a few that can't read the signs or a map ) The weather looks to be changing on Sunday so saturday might be the day to be out there. As for me work is getting in the f'ing way and I might have to venture into the war zone in November

I always toyed with the idea of hunting around the mill, when I worked on site there for several years I made a point of monitoring the deer. They are there, and they aren't shot up, and it is archery only.

Might be time to make the move in 2011.

For me I'd like to poke around the satellite station. Never did that yet but its on my places to go list. The good thing is that North, South, East or West there are deer. Currently I'm set up in three different locations on private posted land. ( Thank God for good friends and I do have their permission because for some strange reason they think I'm trustworth :D). In Sept I ran myself silly monitoring all three sites and keeping them baited. I like this time because the bucks are starting to do their thing and I stalk around with the rattle and grunt routine and set out a decoy.

Sometimes it works most of the time it doesn't but its too bloody cold for me to sit in a tree for three hours.

We went out last night for the last hour of daylight, absolutely nothing till sunset. Ok says I, legally 1 hour left. In 5 minutes the field behind where we were sat was covered in does (closed till 1st Nov) and the fringes with a big buck that obly presented himself fleetingly. Sadly there is a fireworks party on saturday evening (my clients next break) but we may try and get in on Sunday.
We just sit behind an old hay trailer on the grass and out they come, superb pasture surrounded by woodland. On the walk back as we stepped out of the shadows into the moonlight we diusturbed a herd of does. man it felt cold, even the flask of tea didnt help!

Well another 7 days have passed.

New camera out last Saturday. TONS of pictures, all at night, one pic of the nose of an average sized buck.

Sat in the stand, nothing moving again, no calls were answered in any way shape or form, not even an upset doe was to be found.

I have also heard that the calling season for moose in and around this area has also hasn't really happened.

Wonder how much our warm wet autumn has effect or delayed the normal mating patterns of the animals.

My buddy was on the stand Thursday and not a sniff. I drove to Shellbrooke on Thursday night and did not see a single animal in the ditches which is very strange for that drive at night. Could be the full moon. The new moon should see things pic up I hope.

I need to fill my Regular tag its getting close to the Cold times and I hate hunting in -20. Call me a wimp but thats why I took up the bow and the muzzle loader.

Yes, I don't wanna put my bow away either but it is almost looking to be a rifle season to fill my tags:(

Maybe the morning will bring better luck, I'll give a report, I put my decoy out in front of the camera tonight after I left., see if that scares em or keeps them in.
