Stock mounted cartridge carriers, do you use one?

I bought one years ago, tried it on my '94. I found that walking with it, it tried to empty itself.

Then I noticed the little manufacturers tab on it "Trail Marker"
NOT FUNNY!

So, figuring the tapered case of the 30-30 was to blame, I tried the 308. Worse!, they work out of both top and bottom.

Tried with 45-70 500. Too heavy, it even manages to work the rim down into the elastic to go out the bottom.

Hmm, goes in drawer. Forgotten.

Many years pass.

Moose hunting 338WM, I dig it out and try again with the fat 338 cartridge. I'm not walking, except to the stand, what could happen?

Well, there's a 338WM somewhere out in the bush right now. What a piece of junk this thing is!

How's your luck?

I see quite a few posted in various pics. some must actually work, either that or you just keep refilling them!

I do use one on the Ruger No.1. I have not noticed any problem with shedding cartridges but I'm not real fond of the appearance. I would not use it on any rifle which has a magazine.

I us one on my Thompson encore. I have never had an issue with loosing ammo. I am also a walker. I can’t sit still too long, and put on many miles while hunting. Never had issues on trails, or bush whacking. I do keep an eye on the spares, but they always seem to be right where I left em.
My typical rounds are 25/06 and 223. Just lucky I guess.
I also don’t use mine on Amy rifle with a magazine. Just the single shots.

I don’t like them much. The only reason I see for attaching ammunition to your hunting rifle is if you keep it unloaded and when you pick it up you have ammo right there, ready to load. I have some slings with cartridge loops and that’s what I do - pick up rifle and load with ammo from the loops.

I don’t like walking around with extra rounds anywhere on the rifle.

I am a fan, having had to reload from a stock pouch while away from the truck during more than one particularly fruitful hunt. The rounds are far easier to access than from a box in your pocket, and I have never had an issue with missing ammo. If your stock pouch is shedding ammo, then I can only presume that you have selected a pouch with the incorrect size of loops for your particular calibre of ammo....

I had the same issues with the stock cartridge holder. Also, it increases the weight of the rifle and decreases the maneuverability
I just ordered and received the belt cartridge holder, which solves the problem

I use one, but not as intended. Fill it with cartridges and put in my pocket. Can be folded and keeps cartridges handy and quiet.

That's actually a really good idea. I'm always looking for a spot to put my extra rounds where they won't go clink clink every step, and this is perfect!

I won't use them simply because their use negates the possibility of making a left hand shot. "You'll never do that in the field!" Except I have.

I dunno. I use one for my single shot 12ga shorty that rides shotgun when I'm on the FSRs during grouse season, and it gets used both ways because I shoot left so it's set up that way but my friends all shoot right. It sits a lot lower and farther forward than Bartoks though... It hasn't been carried very far so I can't really comment on losing rounds but the shotgun shells are pretty snug especially if you push them all the way in til the rim bottoms out. In fact, I don't push them in all the way because they're hard to get out reasonably quick.

I have long thought about getting one of the ones similar to Bartoks but with a pouch on the side wth the loops inside. I don't like the idea of having the ammo exposed like that with the crap I go through on the coast, and it would eliminate the possibility of dropping them.

I use one with a flap on my single shot kick around rifle. But other than that I’ve found them pretty useless. I’ve lost ammo when I’ve tries them before. I tried one on my model 24 this fall(figured 20 gauge in my pocket and 30-30 on the stock would work), lost half a dozen 30-30 in just a few hours.

I yewse one on the A-5 20 when I'm bewt skewt'in around look'in fur the feathers.
It wants to creep up though.
Need to nawtch it so the nawtch falls over the sling stud.

The pouch that is on my rifle works equally well both ways. The ammo loops are sewn onto stiff, nylon strips backed with male-side Velcro. The ammo strips attach to Female-side Velcro that is stitched to the outside of the pouch (as in my photo), but also stitched to the inside of the pouch so that you can carry the ammo secured internally or externally, however you prefer. I like my ammo exposed for hand-feeding into the action, but it does increase the risk of ammo loss if your elasticized loops are not sufficiently snug. Fortunately, my pouch came with three different nylon strips, each with different-sized ammo loops. That makes getting a good fit a breeze.

I use them on most of my rifles, but make them myself so they work.
I have built butt stock mag holders and pouches for loose .22 ammo for my single shots.
How you build them dictates how well they work.
Those fit everything elastic jobs area nightmare.
If you ever heard of "Rounds on Rifles" years ago, that was me in my saddle shop...
