Coat #3 of Scherell's Schaftol...
It's not getting any darker, so I will stop at 3 coats. I will give it 48 hours to cure.

Well, the finish went on well, and after 4 coats, there was no real improvement in colour or grain detail, so I called it a day. Definitely not spectacular wood, but the finish is soft and smooth and an improvement over the original finish. I can't ask for more out of a $200 trunk gun. The biggest improvement will be the slip-on recoil pad which replaces the 1/4" piece of useless hard rubber !

That's some good work! Does it take chokes? I have one of the Norinco 12g backpackers that sold for $99 back in the day. 12'' barrel that shoots 2 feet high at 8 yards; front bead sight is threaded right through the thin barrel and stuck 1.5mm into the barrel, and after two shots the front stock would come off in your hand. Fixed all that and painted the chu wood black. Seemed like a deal until you held it, lol. Yours however, looks like a good investment, made better with your skills!

Another ugly gloss finished monstrosity covering some nice Turkish Walnut...

Wow! Thanks to The Kurgan for sharing his work! Very nice results.

I do not like shiny wood on guns, so have nearly always stayed with good old BLO. Kurgan explained the Shaftol very well, so might give that a shot.
