I took my brand new Stoeger out to the range today for the first time and it had some problems. I had broken it down, cleaned it, removed all the grease, and oiled it as per the manual before firing.

I ran 10 Federal low recoil slugs through it and it performed flawlessly (high brass). I then ran a box of Winchester 7.5 and I had about a 40% FTF rate. (I didn't have the recoil reducer in the stock installed)

I've heard that this shotgun doesn't like low brass but I was wondering if there was maybe a break in period? Should I run a box of full power slugs through it and try the low brass again or just bite the bullet and buy high brass target loads? I bought this shotgun specifically for 3 gun.

You might get more answers in the Action Shooting forum regarding 3gun, but my 3gun 3500 is finicky with the low power loads; it likes Score shells. I'm going to install a Benelli hammer spring as per the interwebs, supposed to help.
I broke mine in with a couple boxes of 3.5", and saved 6 shells to show they wouldn't (quite) fit in the tube with the Nordic extension.
A trick that seemed to help was polishing the mag tube where the recoil spring slides? Played shoeshine on it with...200 and 600 grit sandpaper.

Where did you find the hammer spring? I'll give that and the polishing a shot.

I have a 3500 as well, i had to run 200 heavy loads through it to break it in but now it shoots anything i feed it. A lot of guys at my club have issues with the winchester low brass in their semis i personally dont use it but on occasion have tried some and never had an issue with it, maybe yours just doesnt like it, try the remington low brass gun club ammo and see if you still have the same problem.

My experience has been the same as above with the picky 3500. I have had good luck with the Winchester AA loads and super-target cycling and with the score gold loads as well. I have also experienced issues when wearing heavy winter jackets with lighter loads as the jacket absorbs to much recoil and the inertia doesn't completely cycle. Polishing the tube and a few other contact points for the bolt helped a lot with the cycling issues in my 3500.

How would I go about polishing those contact points?

I used a fine sandpaper 800 or 1000 grit followed by a buffing pad on a dremel. I couldn't tell you off hand the parts I polished but if you've shot it a bit you should see some wear near the contact points just touch them up a bit.

I also noticed some sticky residue inside the chamber, maybe this is contributing to the light rounds not cycling properly. It looks like some kind of glue from the screws in the top of the receiver. I tried to remove it with alcohol but it won't come off. I'll give the sandpaper a try.

UPDATE

I sanded the magazine tube using 400, 800, 1200, 2000 and then polished it with a dremel and buffing wheel/polishing compound. I took her to the ranger yesterday and even at -7C, she ran a full box of low brass flawlessly.

Thanks for everyone's help.
