So I have a stoeger x50 that's getting 2" groups at 60 yards, I tried 5 different brands of pellets and exchanged it but still no better, am I missing something here or is this the best that I can expect?

Well I feel like an idiot, I ment 60 feet not 60 yards. Wow

Its not just the moa, springers experience recoil in both directions before the pellet has left the barrel. PCP and other compressed air types don't have to contend with recoil, better quality springers are designed to overcome recoil so if you want to spend 6-900 bucks you will experience a higher degree of accuracy. Have you done any improvments such as replacing the trigger, or internal components to smooth the shot cycle. Such things wil usually improve accuracy. I'm not familiar with Stoeger products but I'm sure there is room for improvment.

my X50

I just got one and am in the process of deciding if I did a good thing or not. I went through 6 different pellets......and varied from a 12" spread at 30 meters to a 1" spread. Final best pellet for me was a Crosman Copperhead Super Vel.

I did find that the firing cycle is quite harsh and the gun could definitely stand a take-down and smoothing......including some tar on the mainspring.

I also noticed that besides being VERY pellet sensitive it's also VERY hold sensitive. I can now get consistent 1" groups at 30 meters (with some flyers - my fault) but much smaller groups if I do EVERYTHING just right....OK for a paper puncher but not so good for a hunting rig that needs fast shots.

the fact that you absolutely NEED a scope to do this is annoying....but the 'light bar' sights are beyond annoying and pretty much require that a scope be installed. Why the company would put those idiotic 'tinker toy' sights on is beyond me. Well........OK........they cheaped out and just put on crap rather than some REAL sights. Not hard to figure out.

Overall quality of the gun is quite good (except for the 'Crackerjack' prize plastic sights). The gun, of course, won't get anywhere NEAR the advertized 1500fps.....and this is a good thing. I'm wondering if the inaccuracy of most pellets is because it's breaking the speed of sound....and that WILL cause the pellets to fly about rather foolishly. I'm now looking for some heavies in 177 that will keep the MV down a bit lower. I suspect that the clean-up on the gun plus some heavier pellets might turn this one into a damned fine shooter. We'll see.

Last problem is the trigger. It's a definite 2-stage...as advertized......but adjusting out the 'creep' in the 2nd stage is proving to be difficult. Haven't done much work on that yet so it might just be me.

This is the typical behaviour of such powerful springers and the groups are ok for these guns.Stick to over 9 grain pellets to keep their speed under 1000fps,if you have a .177,its best to always buy these guns in .22.

Hi guys

I was tempted to purchase an X50 in the spring of last year. After some research, I decided that the extra $ for the X50 seemed excessive compared with the specs of the X20. With some hesitation I purchased the X20 and am thrilled with it. I have chrony'd it at a fastest speed of 1000fps (alloy) and 850 - 900 with Stoeger X-Hunt pellets 8.64gr. This is a .177 model with a scope and is accurate as hell. I have put thousands of shots through it with no issues. No problem brining down small game and those pesky starlings. It's a very accurate air rifle.

getting better

Just to add.......I guess I got the right pellet and the rest seems to be all centered around hold. I was hanging on to the forend fairly tightly but as soon as I just let the front end rest on its own weight my groups tightened up a bunch. The rest of it seems to be getting a consistent hold and pressure on the back end......VERY light cheek weld. I'm now getting 1/2" groups at 30 meters (measured) but still manage a flyer out out to 1" or so with most......but again, that's me trying to get used to shooting this thing...and the trigger creep that still needs to be cleaned up.

flyer problem solved

Well........silly me. I happened to look down at my scope and noticed that it was creeping backwards:mad:. Fortunately there is a slot milled across the dovetails for a setscrew and it was a short piece of work to dismount the ring/base at the rear and drill/tap a setscrew to fit into the slot.

No more flyers and I can now get very consistent 3/4" groups at 30 meters with no flyers. Taking my time and really concentrating on what I'm doing will get me 1/2" groups.:D

NOW I can work on the trigger and be able to see if I can get some better results for groups.....but I must say that I'm now very pleased with what I'm getting and can't see me being able to shoot the gun much better than what I'm doing right now.

I've got an order out for the following and it should arrive before I get back on the 2nd from a short holiday. With any luck I can get in some shooting time, weather permitting, and report on if the heavier pellets make any difference....and also see if the gun has a size preference for the 10.69 grainers.

H&N Silverpoint 177 11.57 grain
H&N Rabbit Mag. 11 177 15.74 grain
H&N Barracuda Match 177 4.50mm 10.69 grain
H&N Barracuda Match 177 4.51mm 10.69 grain
H&N Barracuda Match 177 4.52mm 10.69 grain
H&N Barracuda Match 177 4.53mm 10.69 grain

Had a bit of a delay as I took a few days holidays....but back now and back shooting. I received my pellets and just got back from trying them out.

H&N Silverpoint 177 11.57 grain.....absolutely terrible - 4" groups at 30 meters

H&N Rabbit Mag. 11 177 15.74 grain...even worse...easily 12" spread at 30 meters

H&N Barracuda Match 177 4.50mm 10.69 grain - wow!!! these things REALLY wanted to stack on top of one another at 30 meters.

H&N Barracuda Match 177 4.51mm 10.69 grain - and so did these

H&N Barracuda Match 177 4.52mm 10.69 grain - and so did these

H&N Barracuda Match 177 4.53mm 10.69 grain - group started to open up.

All in all I'm delighted. I have 3 differnt size pellets that will shoot great.......well, good enough for what I use them for. I still have to get a proper rest going and get the 3 good ones on paper to find out just how good they are. SO...........the answer to the X50 grouping is to try a variety of pellets to find the one it likes. It WILL shoot very well if the owner does his part.

Cheers - Gus
