Stopping Rifle for the Great Bears

Need to know more about that one!

Hope the remuneration/remote location are worth it to you. A helluva risky occupation fraught with possible liabilities.

It may not be at the top of the list for anyone, but after tree planting in northern Alberta for 4 years as a Safety Rep for the camp and the acting bear guard, it's a lot of the same and it gives me a chance to see the real north before I graduate university while doing something I'm experienced at.

I might be confused... but the case your thinking of I believe it was a black bear. It was a woman that was killed. Her coworkers had fire extinguishers and shovels. No guns, bangers or spray allowed.

My daughter was onsite in Ft Mac when that happened . It was not good . The womans co-workers went after the Black Bear with anything they could lay their hands on . Unfortunately , they couldn't drive the bear off and it killed her , a terrible day . As far as I know , and I may be wrong , the policy of firearms on site hasn't changed . As a matter of fact , there hasn't been much said about the incident since . I'm sure some of you may know more about the after incident response .

They got it off her and were rendering first aid... the bear came back for seconds and a second worker was injured.

Why not something like a BAR in 300 or 338 win mag.

I've owned one since the late 80's and it has been 100% reliable in all weather conditions.

Slimbo your characterization of bear guards in Northern BC as just hacking darts is wildly unfair, I have also seen them take naps.

Another favourite was the guy who showed up with his "fancy" tacticool Turkish shotgun and 3 inch, 300 grain, sabot slugs in a smooth bore barrel. I asked him if they keyholed when he shot them and he said "nope" doubt he had ever fired them. He claimed they were the best money could buy, in other words the most expensive ones he could find...

He would spend a lot of time dusting his shotgun with a paintbrush and flagging people with the barrel.

I'll take bear spray any day of the week, might not work for polar bears. The only clients I have worked for who allow you to carry a gun are the kind of work where a few extra pounds can be killer, never mind the hassle of carrying one through thick bush all day.
