Straight Pull AK rifles

$1000 is steep but $1000 for one of these is a much better option than $800 for a deactivated paper weight. You know its almost $1000 for an airsoft AK? This bolt action version is still a much better deal. Id buy one just for the fact it may pave the way for a semi auto version in the future. Plus, if its allowed to have 10 round + magazines. Wowzers!

What I don't understand is why someone doesn't bring in receivers for Valmet M78 and build them here like they build kit guns in the states. I understand the people who paid $5000 for their M78's would be pissed but those who paid $250 for an SKS in the 1960's was probably also pissed when they came in by the boat load for less than what they paid.

It's NOT AN AK, that's the whole point... It's one of these:

As for Valmet, they're no longer in business and therefore there ain't no more receivers to buy. That ship has sailed a long, long time ago... In essence, if you want to buy a cheap AK variant (or any combination thereof) in Canada, you have to buy yourself a DeLorean and drive it at 88 mph first.

There is NO just valmet receivers. They are not made anymore and the ones that are around even the ones in the states fetch a good price and if they ARE a FA rifle then they would sure as hell not destroy it just to salvage a receiver from it especially when they can go anywhere from 15,000$ and up.
These were not kit guns either

This is a dream that would never happen

I think the concept relies more on a box of unbuilt receivers just being found one day. Or a S/A receiver being stripped down and build being done on that.

Thing is M78 receivers a bigger dimensionally then AK ones so any AK part will not be capable of fitting.

You would need an M71 or even M76 receiver to do an AK build and those are prohibited.

Trust me, i have done my research and contacted several gunsmith about this exact thing as i was going to import an AK kit and have it done to one of my m78's

I'd be ok with an RPK build. Or using a Hunter receiver.

When you look beyond the whole "I want one because I can't technically have it" argument, the AK is inferior and far less evolved to some of the NR options we now have available (for target practice / hunting purposes, of course). Plus a lot of these new options also cost a hell lot less than even a stripped M78 receiver would, not to mention a complete Valmet!

I'm sure that if you gave the antis of 2014 the choice between prohibiting some clunker-ass semi auto "AK variant" vs. some of the high tech "scary" bullpups & co we now have on the market, they wouldn't think twice about it. They would let you have a semi AK in a heartbeat if it meant taking away your T97, Tavor, etc... Truth is, the AK has outlived its' usefulness for the modern military and is no longer considered "the best choice", unless you're a child soldier somewhere in Liberia and your warlord only has 50$ to spend on arming you. Even the Chinese PLA, with their millions of soldiers to arm, have moved on from the AK design in favor of something new and more suitable to the 21st century. Comfort and versatility are the key today. That is true for soldiers, sports shooters and hunters alike, hence why we see so many civilian versions of those new designs. Not that anyone's complaining (except for the ever fear-mongering antis).

Best thing is, with the use of modern polymers, these new age rifles can be built faster and cheaper than the all steel & wood dinosaurs of the 1950's, à la AK. All in all, prohibited or not, we're not missing much. Think of the semi-auto AK as an SKS with a better looking factory stock, that's all... lol!

Just get the Chinese to clone the receiver.

Why must there always be someone that tries to make everyone see the light with AKs and how "inferior" they are?

I have a valmet. I love it. But I still want an AK carbine, not because I'm told I can't, because it is what it is.
