Found these 30-06 cases at the range today. I've never seen anything like them before.

Anyone know anything about these & why the ring?

Barnaul steel case, the ring is to allow the case to expand in sloppy chambers and semi'autos to prevent head seperation.

Thanks ..... Makes perfect sense now. :)

Could have use some cases like that in my pump 308 yesterday. Snapped the case head off one on firing while using brass that I should have retired 2 firings back. Went to extract and only the head came out. [cheap old guy fail] :)

A case extractor comes in handy when that happens.

Cuz they are married, probably drunk too if they are just lying around.

Correct answer already provided, just bumping my post Count :p

You should retire all the 308 cases that were fired from that rifle, with that die setup. The only way for a case to snap at the case head is from having the wrong headspace and it then stretches the body above the webbing. I’m sure you know all this already….

I already trashed that whole lot. It's been fired FLR too many times and fired in a 760 pump. Loads were a bit hot as well.

I've had a couple case-head separations over the years. I just inserted a cleaning rod from the breech, then pulled it back with a brush on it and that popped the case out. IIRC, I used a 7mm brush in a .25 calibre rifle.

Good to see that ye tossed that crap. I don't use pickup brass unless it be fresh, once fired stuff from a bolt gun or single shot that the user left behind.

I used RCBS small base loading dies for my 760 and had no issues with Rem & Win brass back then. My loads using 180 gr Hornady SP bullets were kept to around 2400 fps. and the brass lasted fine for me. Running warm loads in many pumps & autos is counter intuitive to case life, not to mention the ding to the wallet for us cheap koontz. ;)
