striker fired polymer pistols

I really like the Grand Power what with the rotating bolt, little guy makes his own gun company, etc, but its not striker fired.

Steyer is in my budget.

Why another striker fire? How about a Beretta 92 or CZ75? If you are shooting IDPA you can shoot SSP (striker fire or DA first pull) and ESP (SA first pull cocked and locked). Sorry, the 92 is a decocker, no #### and lock. If it's your budget, the CZ P07 is cheaper.

The Steyr is an under dog, love my Steyr, but I don't think its much better than your SR9, just the grip which you will have adjust to... And the sights.

I have a 92f already, great gun. and a 1911, also great.

I figure, I need a single action(1911), DA/SA, (92f) and a striker fired to round out the auto loading pistols. I do have one, I just figured maybe time to change it up is all.

I also see that maybe a Walther P99 is in the budget, if bought used anyways. Any idea how these fare? I am not sure I like the mag release, but the rest of it is cool beans.

Glock 17 are ubiquitous as well, however their grip angle isn't for everyone, and they still feel like a piece of 2x4 in your hand.

They do, but only if you've never held a 2x4 or a Glock 17. 2x4's measure 1 5/8" x 3 3/8", where the gen 4 Glock measures 1 1/8" x 2 1/4", without a backstrap. So, yeah they are nearly identical.

I have a m&p range kit in 9mm and although it's a great gun and only paid $650 for it, I do wish I would have spent the little extra for the XDM. My friend has one in 40 cal and it is a real sweet gun, trigger is great and it has factory match grade barrel.

I would have to say the Springfield XDM is my top choice. Compared to the M&P i would have to say XDM along with the factory match grade barrel, also has a better trigger than the M&P. Although Glocks are well known for their reliability i found the grip angle unnatural. Glocks feel like you're shooting at the floor. Ive put through about 3000 rounds through the XDM and had no failures to date and it is very accurate as i use it for IPSC comps

no .45 as I want to keep costs down. I have a nice 1911 if I want to do that.

What is the difference between the XD and XDM?

and I do like the look of the Walther P99. again, any thoughts?

OP, there is simply no substitute for hefting your options side by side, comparing how they feel in your hand. Preferably, while shooting them, of course!

Performance-wise, any of these options will be "enough gun". You may find it relatively difficult to find extra magazines and a reasonable holster if you choose one of the less common options (not to mention spare parts). If this is a concern (as it is for many/most of us), then you might consider sticking to the Glock and M&P families.

Be aware, though, that some individual specimens of older production M&P9s (not the 40s) have been found to have amazingly poor mechanical accuracy. Given the modest savings when buying used, I would buy new if you go with this option.

Advertised improvements of the XDm over the XD:

Adjustable backstrap
Match-grade barrel
No trigger pull required for takedown
More aggressive grip texture for better grip
More aggressive slide serrations for better grip
Triple-position Picatinny rail for more accessory adjustment options

I'm a proud owner of an L9-A1; VERY fine piece of kit. Trigger breaks extremely crisp, short reset, points like a dream, and built tight, to boot! Not a whole lot not to like, imho!
