I have a Remington 11-48 that I want to strip down and refinish. After taking the recoil pad off I went to take off the stock but the slotted nut / bolt holding it on is seized tight. According to the manual I found on the Remington website it looks like a custom nut in conjunction with a lock washer and a flat washer. My thoughts at this point are; a) finding something along the lines of a tire iron and grinding down the tip to the maximum slot size. I would use something as close to the diameter of the hole as possible to reduce the odds of slipping. b) An impact gun. Again, probably having to grind a custom slotted tip.

Any advice will be appreciated.

My buddy had a similar problem. The head of the screw was slotted with a space in the middle and even with the largest screwdriver I could find, it would slip or you just couldn't get enough torque on it to break it loose.

Pop into a a specialty tool supply shop and look for one of the small drag link sockets. You'll might have to grind down the tip to fit the width of the screw. You'll be able to break that bolt loose using your socket wrench.

A good idea would be to use an impact driver to break it loose once you get a bit that fits well.
I've used my impact driver many times to get gummed up/rusted up screws and bolts moving.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up clamping the receiver in a workmate portable bench and then using a small pry bar that has a square shaft. I was then able to secure a crescent wrench on the shaft of the pry bar to get the extra torque I needed to get it loose. I will definitely be cleaning and lunging the threads prior to reassembling.
