Sub $1000 starter AR

Heat shield not an issue for what you will put it through and if you want to change the furniture it’s easy and pretty economical. I swapped out the hand guard for a Magpul SL which has a heat shield, added some forward reach, better ergos and M-LOK compatibility, win, win, win for under $50

Thanks for all the info everyone. It seems like the SW is going to be the best bang for my buck.

Is there anything I should be mindful of when looking at a preowned AR?
Brands to stay away from?

I own a nea 12.5 with nothing more then a afg ,strikefire 11 red dot a giessele super gas block a troy brake and ruger buis plus lpk , its a blast to shoot and never had any issues , i also own a ruger ar 556 which is cheap too untill i went crazy with after market stuff on it
i like my ruger the best if i new how to put a pic on here lol i would
cheers , i wouldnt be too worried about rounds down it cause us canadians dont go stupid with 30 rd mag dumps :) chrome lined or not the barrel will last

In a used gun (and this is just from my personal experience) avoid Olympic Arms/SGW (they are fortunately rare and easy to avoid!), and NEA. Norincos can be a bit rough, but I've had good experiences with them. These days, just go with one of the decent new offerings for under 1K... S&W, Bushmaster, PSA...

So to sum it all up.
I should just buy one of the brand new budget ARs and go from there?
Steer clear of used (for now)

So who's got the best deal on the sport 2? Can I still get the free ship and LAR mag combo?

Just buy colt dude. Read up on the TDP.

Colt Canada is ideal save up start there and stay there. Or Colt USA. LMT DD BCM and just forget all the budget crap, just save a days pay and buy once cry once.

My S&W shoots plates at 200 yards out of the box stock with no tinkering. For $700 bucks I couldn't really ask for more.

Its sad we cant use AR's for hunting.

argh... I'm torn. i know i said sub $1000. but for right around there I could be looking at a colt (not an expanse) or the arms east stag for 995.
I'm leaning towards the colt le6920 but the stag deal at armseast sounds pretty tempting as well. (plus they were the only dealer to respond to my thread) however it looks like it isn't in stock a this time.

I don't mind paying a little more to get quality components and a better fit and finish. after reading more about the platform(there is so much info out there it will make your head spin) im more confused than when I started...

Take a look at the “ Advice on my first AR” thread.
If you move up from the S&W, Bushmaster, and PSA category, it opens up a lot more quality options.
The Colt LE and Stag are nice guns and will serve you well.

Hey there!

Yes I've read through. your thread and a few others that are there. like I said there is enough info out there to make my head spin and definitely reconsider a budget AR . when for a few more bucks you can have something Chrome lined, with proper feed ramps, and BCG coatings.

Its probably not going to be a competition piece but for the few hours of time I can get at the range. I want it to work and work flawlessly. I don't want to tinker, nor do i have the time. and if im only going to buy one (yeah right) i better make sure it can do everything I might want it to do.

For what it's worth. I've been running my Windham Weaponry SRC for 3 years and I looove it ! It comes with flat top and a rail on the gas block so you can put any types of iron sights combo you want. I went with EMTAN battle sights (Israeli) and i they work great too !

It's all personal but I like the flat tops and foldable front sight. It gives me a cleaner line of sight through the red dot.

It's nice, simple, reliable and made in Maine (which is right next door for me)

Good luck with your search don't forget to post pictures of what you end up getting

I've got some flip ups on PCC's that I have and I do like the "co witness" they provide.

I'm a fan of the flat top as well but I like the option of carry handle and like the look as well ( because, hey, looks are just as important as function, right? lol)

I've not looked in to the WW line as much, but I hear it has great reviews.

any input on carbine vs mid length gas system? I'd like to go with a 16 inch barrel rather than 18 or 20. I love the look of a SBR but I want to enjoy the shoot, and not have a concussion... although, I don't see myself shooting past 100m... no ranges around me go out past that..

I think I'm going to go with DI rather than piston. just to save a few bucks. I don't mind cleaning my firearms and rather enjoy the process.

The differences amongst different brands are not much these days.

Yes, back 10 years ago it mattered more, and 15 years ago it was a big deal.

But in 2017, most manufacturers and their networks of subcontractors have perfected the art of mass producing AR. Even cheap AR works.

Yes, there are the "closer to mil spec " guns. Little things insisted by the military like MP, chromelining, certified steel.....chromelining of BGC interior. But the wide spread use of different technologies like nitriding of more available steel drops the cost and make mass production faster. The end products are just as useable for most applications.

When it comes to dimension and tolerance in the actual TDP, the TDP has been floating around and seen by many contractors who work for Colt and FN over the years. Yes, they cannot actually "copy" the TDP, but if you are an engineer you read through the TDP and you will get the jizz of it. The cat had been out of the bag for many years.
