Sub Compact Bolt Action Rifles - Why?

And back on topic.... :)

I think the original question posed, "Sub Compact Bolt Action Rifles, Why?"

Is best answered visually with a couple of the examples provided so far.

I like them both but I’m still carbon barrel A-phobic. Am I a bad person?

How short is a "sub compact"? I have an 18" barrel 500 Jeffery. While 18' isn't that short when it burns over 120gr or powder is sure is lol.

Why you say? I like to carry a rifle while I'm hiking/gold panning/fishing and a nice short rifle is a breeze to carry In thick bush. So if I'm not hunting I like a rifle that is under 38"oal. When hunting I like a 22-24" barrel to keep velocity up.

I once saw a video of a guy beating a carbon barrel against a rock or cinder block. He didn't hold back. He then installed it and fired off some amazing groups. They are tough. That is my first one, a Hardy, and it looks just flawless inside and out. I will be testing it soon.

Here's a view with a real camera. I find cell phone cameras distort dimensions and twist things.

The eighteen-and-a-bit semiauto rule provides your benchmark; sub compact would be anything with a shorter barrel that has to be a manual repeater. So it starts at an honest 18" but most good examples of the genre would be more obviously shorter.

I have 3 RAR rifles with 16.25" barrels. They are in the sub-compact category. The Ruger American Compact models have 18-20" tubes depending on chambering.
Reckon me LE 45 ACP unit w/14" tube be in the "extra compact" zone for a fixed stock bolt rifle.

This thread is circling back harder then Biden's first press secretary.... :runaway:

16-20" is Compact, aka trapper territory, shorter then that is sub compact.... :)

Nice sub compact you've got there Shucker!

The CZ 527 is a small rifle. It is very accurate in most calibers.

Have one in 7.62x39. Accurate, hate the set trigger. I live coastal, typically about 92% relative humidity. Just sitting in the safe, the bolt knob and front sight rusted, with dehumidifier in safe, nothing else did. Rather disappointed, not a cheap firearm, or low end manufacturer. Something I would expect from a Turkish or say Stoeger, not CZ.

That Gavintube/ultimate reloader guy on YouTube. He's been building some short barreled rifles in the recently introduced calibers( 6 arc, prc, creedmore...etc) to use stressors and keep overall length short. Accuracy and velocity testing to see if it makes sense.

I bought an original 1885 sleeved to 22 LR off the EE.
After one summer trip to the range last year the Marbles(?) tang sight developed rust in merely 4 days. Is when I got around to cleaning it. The rest of the rifle just fine.
Just weird.

Is that a 45 ACP conversion kit? Did you get that here in Canada? And if so, where? More info please? That is also a great looking unit.

Yep it started out with a Special Interest Arms kit that came with a Shilen barrel and the mag adapter . The barrel came as a straight taper 1" tube that I profiled
to the dimensions I needed to fit my front sight setup to get the function & look proper. On plinking days I stick in the adapter and use the pistol mags,
but for hunting use I just use the short LE mag and load the rifle as a single shot.

That my friends is whats called ONE COOL PIECE. Awesome build ShellShucker. PS love the sights

Thank you Dosing for the input. I sent my rifle to K.S. Rem. 700DM 30-06 for a 16.5 " brl. and a few other tweeks. Sounds like a good guy very helpful. I will post when I get it back and shoot it , in about 10 weeks. And I know why a 30-06 well I have a boat load of factory ammo and I reload for it also.

Thanks.

That looks super handy, what do you hunt with it by the way?

I know, why don't Blakeboy and Conor start their own thread and have a pissing match there, and leave this one to the topic at hand. Just a thought, and don't mean to step on any toes.

Pounder: that 30-06 should be a neat set up.

I'm hoping to find a short scope for my build, in the PMII short, 5-25 eotech type range. Hunting will be with a 16.5" barrel, and bench will be with a 26" barrel, hence the larger optic. Our range is out to 1500 M, so I want to be able to see it properly, and not have to change up scopes.
Or am I on the wrong path, and just get two scopes for it, smaller LVPO for hunting, and larger scope for bench work with quick release mounts?
