Sub2000 Modifications and ideas..

How is the front sight attached to the barrel?

it has a front site base kinda AK/VZ58 ish But plastic , looks like the the base is threaded on the barrel? the base is perfectly straight not canted at all so it must be a barrel alignment problem or rear sight alignment problem..

No adjustment on the rear sight?

the front sight can be turned for correction or completely removed by applying heat ..
here is a quote from another website:
I removed mine by cutting off the plastic sight from its metal bushing with a dremmel tool. I then used a heat gun set at 800 degrees and heated the bushing for about 4 minutes at which time the bushing easily slid off and the residue from the loctite that held the bushing on could be wiped clean . After doing this I believe if you wanted to keep the sight in a reusable condition, you would not have to cut the plastic sight off the metal bushing. I believe that placing heat on the barrel adjacent to the bushing would achieve the same result though would likely take a bit longer.

My sights are junk its impossible to zero them .. my front sight blade windage adjustment is maxed out to the right and its still off like 4 inches at 25 m to the right !

Damn, that's definitely a worst case scenario.

The solution is easy... a little rotation of the front sight housing would solve your problem. Easier said than done I realize seeing as how the front sight housing is loctite'd to the barrel. Heat is the only way to get it off and of course the housing is plastic.

That would drive me nuts.

I'd definitely look into this. Perhaps by using a wide-tipped soldiering iron?

Brownells sells all the parts :) - or perhaps a VZ-58 Front sight housing? There'd be a few in Canada to be had for cheap (I think a '58 FSH comes in every spare parts kit)

To rotate the front sight housing to the point where i can zero my rifle it will be canted to the right .. i talked to a gunsmith at Kel tech today he told me this issue is kinda common and the rifle need barrel alignment work, he said they do fix the problem by reassembling it in the assembly jig they have .. they are going to contact vault and get the rifle sent down to them to fix ,, well we will see how this goes lol..

you could do it your self.. mark the present sight position on the barrel, heat it up and move it just a touch, if you move too much you have a mark..
But if you don't mind to wait few weeks for it to get fixed, then send it out,
would be safer this way, i guess..

The problem is the barrel is not aligned true with the receiver , Is has nothing to do with the front sight base, its on perfectly straight and level ,, im not going to heat it up and move the sight base over so it looks all crooked and canted off to the right, that would work to get a zero but its not the proper fix ,, kel tec is well aware of this bug and said if the front sight base is straight and level and your windage is maxed out and you cant get a zero then the whole barrel needs to be pulled off and then reinstalled and trued .. if you take the handguards off my gun you can see the barrel is not seated in the receiver straight it tilts ,, is all crooked lol

ok.

Well, I hope I don't experience this crooked barrel crap. :)

Please post results for anyone else needs to go through this process... I better take it out this weekend to ensure mine is shooting straight (now I'm worried).

I haven't even looked mine over yet. :p

Too late...

I just got back from the range... The FSH on my SUB2000 is also offset; I was able to compensate, but, it looks stupid (the orange blade is almost to the edge of the hood). It was also shooting a few inches to the right, fresh out of the box.

Again, it does shoot straight now, but the front sight blade is making up for the offset housing by nearly touching the edge.

$300 it'd be acceptable I suppose... $700 after taxes, not acceptable IMHO.

It shoots straight, but definitely looks crappy.

What is the update on this thread? Anyone else have similar problem??

sub2000 mods

1. Quadrail
2. Magpul Gen2 front sight
3. ADM quick release mount, vortex sparc
4. Hogue grip
5. 2 X 31 round mags

no ftf, fte after 1600 rounds.

Cool gun! Just a couple of questions...

1. I am assuming those are 31 round mags pinned to 10 rounds (unless you are in the U.S.)... where did you get those?

2. With the quick release scope mount, do you need to re-zero your scope every time you remove it?

3. Have you tried getting the scope to co-witness with the iron sights, and how would someone go about doing that kind of thing?

Yea and the sight picture looks s**tty when the post is jacked all the way to the right .. not the best for quick target acqusition ,, sounds like the same guy assembled your rifle as mine..

aye~

I will say that once I had it sighted in, it did shoot amazingly well and straight, only it looks terrible to see a sight blade to an extreme side; you are correct about sight aquisition. I kept having to think "Ok, forget the hood... I just need to get the blade in the center of the rear aperture" but then you'd see this "ghost" hood that was completely out of whack <sigh>

My Summary on the Sub2000 is as follows:
Pros~
-It's very light
-It's very compact when folded
-It's Non-Restricted
-It shoots 9x19 and accepts popular 10rnd mags (mine is Beretta BTW)
-Once sighted in (as they are NOT sighted in out of the box) they are accurate; I actually nailed the 200m gong 5 times out of 20rnds which impressed me (irons sights and 9x19 ammo!!). At 25m it was one ragged hole in the bullseye.

Cons~
-Cheap Cheap Cheap construction!! If this was $300, I wouldn't be complaining... but $600??? OMG I got ripped off!! The received is two pieces of super thin plastic. For the price it should have been aluminium.
-The offset front sight housing is a major turn-off.
-It feels cheaper than a toy (but it shoots real bullets); Phillips head screws everywhere really are ugly.

Summary:
It's a gun that works, goes bang and meets our Canadian laws. It has the potential to be fun, but I'm unimpressed with the overall cheap feeling of the gun. So much so that it is overriding any sense I have to keep it.
It'd be ideal for an "Incase of Emergency, Break Glass!" type of gun but I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable walking into Zombieland-Apocalypse with this as my only weapon.

I got to add... I am seriously re-thinking any future Kel-Tec purchases; unless we get them at US pricing, there's no way I'll pay this much again for this much plastic.

I'll be EE'ing this baby shortly for a steal if anyone wants it.

~G37 out!

1. 31 pinned to 10, got them from EE, they where shipped from usa
2. never needed to re-zero, the mount was from w w w.theshootingedge.com/productList/1042310/1000774
3. the mount i got was the high (didn't realize at the time) but they do a lower mount that might co-witness)

I dont use the magpul much at all i use the sparc most of the time, i have tried the magpul at 30meters and its not bad, as there is no windage adjustment its shoots a little to the right but i can compensate for that.

The quadrail needs the blue threadlocker otherwise it becomes loose after 20 rounds.

Overall i am very happy and its been a very reliable 9mm even with reloads.

alright, Finally received my Sub 2000 carbine. Well i must say compare to su-16 and RFB, sub is lower quality.. few things that surprised me are these.. the pistol grip is so weak and rough, and the front of the grip opens up with a smallest effort, plus what the hell those round cutouts are on the very bottom of the grip..? also the tip of the trigger was so sharp, i managed to cut my finger while dry fire.. :) another thing, i'd say the most embarrassing for kel-tec.. : in the top/back of the handguard there is a cut out for a rear sight to go into while folded, so on my gun this cutout was about an 1/8" too short and the sight would not fit in, but would press against the handguard, deforming it.. now i have the whole area around that hole dented in..

Also i noticed something wiered, and i dont know if thats normal..
if the mag is empty or no mag at all, the bolt will not go into locked position unless the trigger is pressed... is that normal..? is that a kel-tec's "open on a last round " thing..? this really bugs me, so please let me know.

Ok enough of bad news... lets get back to what this thread is all about.. :)
i managed to get my hands on a Red Lion Forend (with 4 rails $260 ).. :) :) :) :) For those that dont know, Red lion forend rotates in 90* sections, so the optic never has to be dismounted.. or you could use two different optics ,it takes 5 seconds to switch the position ..
so i had to dismount the front sight, and then the rear sight, installed RL rotating forend, with burris FF on top and AFG on the bottom.. Now i'm thinking of creating something that will cover the "ugliness" of the barrel (it is not really pretty under the front sight.) perhaps a long muzzle brake or a fake can.

Few important things to know... Red Lion does not ship to Canada, even if your order goes through, they will refund your money via pay-pal in a couple of days...
Also the front sight is easily removable, but it is one time use... you have to cut or melt it to take it off.

Ok so here as what i have so far, keep in mind muzzle end and stock modifications are still to come.. :) :)

Not normal. Mine locks with empty-mag inserted or No Mag.
