Success! A Very AWESOME Day For my Grandfathers 870 Wingmaster!!

Remington shotguns are fine to shoot steel with a full choke as long as it's #2 shot or smaller, and in your case, 2 3/4 shells. You'll eventually get shot-lines in the choked part of the barrel, but that's no big deal. I did this for years before I could afford a new barrel.

Remington seems to have changed their tune on this lately but not sure why?? Agree at one time they had that posted everywhere but not now. Any ideas??

The saga continues..... Cant find a barrel anywhere. Wholes sale sports doesnt have any and they cant even tell me what comes with. arg....

Run an add on the EE. 12 ga are not hard to find. Even if you have to buy the extra choke tubes seperately they are not that much. A IC 12ga rem choke is like 16.99 at cabelas and most barrels will come with a mod. Been quite a few on over the past year but you have to move on the rem choked ones they sell quickly.Good Luck

If they've changed what they were saying, you can bet it's because someone somewhere did something extremely stupid!

I bought a 1957 Wingmaster and had it opened up to modified for steel shot and shot ducks and geese with it with no issues.

2 3/4 steel shot is all you need for ducks.

Now calgary has found one but it does not come with a barrel nut. What do I need to make this old 870 wingmaster work with a new barrel that does not have the detent?

thx much

Barrels never come with a mag tube cap. Are you 100% sure no spring& ball is fitted. I bought a new one this year and it did

I used to think you needed 3" or 3.5" for ducks and geese. Don't get me wrong, 3.5" BB is a beautiful thing to have for big late season canadas, and I own a 3.5" Nova/Super Vinci that I love to hunt with.
But nothing will replace good shooting, decoy setups and calling. Some of my most satisfying days so far this season have been with my 20 gauge O/U. I wouldn't feel limited by a 2 3/4" chamber in the least.

Why doesn't Remington want you to use it?

If you shoot steel out of it can be dangerous due to the choke in it and it was made for lead... Steel doesn't compress ie thats the problem replace the barrel no more problem...

You are correct! Now I have a nice new barrel from wss. Vented with middle and front bead 3 chokes and wrench. And using same old cap to boot.

Now I just have to figure out exactly what to do to get it to shoot 3 inch. I probably will not do it but then curiosity killed the.......

From what I understand it will shoot 3" (although not tested to do so or recommended to do so by remington) but will not properly eject the shells after shooting because the ejection spring is too short. Changing to the longer spring will require removing and replacing a rivet in the receiver and refinishing the receiver. I decided not to take this route with my '59 wingmaster, and stick with 2 3/4" shells

Maybe you just need to keep a screwdriver in your pocket to pick out the spent hulls ;).

Or you can try it. My 59 skeet shoots 3" no problem with the express barrel on it because somewhere over the years the ejector was replaced and remington only supplied one size at the time to do both 2 3/4" and 3". I also have some factory 2 3/4" 870's here that were factory supplied with 3" and work fine.
Others have witnessed the same here. Unlike 1100's there is no difference in a 2 3/4" vs 3" 870 receiver other than the ejector. I have heard stories about the 2 3/4" receivers having a smaller ejection port by 1/4" but I will be dammed if I can find one.Take care

So what does an ejector look like????? Ok found a video on it. Is it the ejector or the ejector spring that needed to be replaced?

Ok. I am still unsure what we are talking about. I measured the whole on the side of the receiver that the shell ejects through. It is 7.5 centimeters same as a new 870.

The opening, or ejection port, is the same size on all. It is the size of the bent steel spring on the receiver you see through that hole that matters. The 2 3/4" spring is shorter than the 3".

Ok so then I need Brownell's Deluxe Remington 870 Ejector Riveting Staking Tool Set (part #080-612-001, around $38(2010 pricing)now 54.00). Then I would use it to grind off the head of the rivet.... Then replace spring.... then use it to re flatten the rivet and good to go..... And then a new spring for $6.00

Getting close to the price of a new gun lol'

Cool. Thx much. I can see how the spring is shorter as it is visible in the ejector hole.... A new 870 it is hiding just inside the ejector hole a bit.

or just shoot 2 3/4" for a while and see if there is something you can't reach with that that you need to hit . . . might do what you need as is!

What he said.

The other option would have been to leave Grampas bird gun as is and replace it. 870's are pretty reasonably priced.

Just my .02 cents worth.
