sucks 9mm isn't a big game caliber...

I gave my head a shake. still lament how there are so many nice n light carbines that would be great for the bush.

who of you hunt regularly with a more powerful pistol calibre? what do you hunt and what is the gun?

Ok, then... What about 10mm out of a carbine. Say you reload or buy premium matched ammo and limit to 100 yards? Quickload says I could do 1600 fps with a 180gr gold dot and a 18.75" barrel keeping within pressure. Quick target shows on at 100 is 1.5" high at 63 yards and -3 at 125. That covers just about every deer I've ever shot.

I'm talking myself into a new gun...

Ive seen a lead roundball from a 45 cal muzzleloader flatten a nice whitetail at around 40 yards. Pistol caliber carbines can match those ballistics quite easily. I use a jrc in 9mm for calling wolves. Much easier to double with it than a big scope bolt action rifle

Yuppers,,, the world record black bear that held that spot for 40 +++ years was taken with the old school 22 rimfire long,,, its half way between the short and the long-rifle...

The Gal waited for the bear to come face to face when see plugged it,,, it took a few more shots to finish it off...

Up close and personal with a single shot too...

I forgot her name for some reason... Ha...

Cheers from the North

The idiot that shot the deer with his Glock is an a$$hole IMHO. "Freeze"?? WTF! Not a hunter, just some $hit stick out there to kill stuff. He put 6 rounds into that deer and it was still struggling to get up!

A buddy of mine has the Ruger PCC in 9mm, has it scoped with a 1-6 Strike Eagle, nice light weight little rifle that handles nice and is very accurate to the max 100 yards that I shot it. Don't think I would use it to kill a deer though, I would have to be in a real survival situation to do that.

I killed a bull elk with a couple sticks and some string also. Now I wouldn’t hunt elk with a .223 but there’s a lot less energy with an arrow.

Say no more... you are revealing a whole lot with that comment.

Google up "Phil Shoemaker 9mm", or fix this link and go here to read his write-up: ht tps://www.americanhunter.org/articles/2016/8/10/alaska-outfitter-defends-fishermen-from-raging-grizzly-with-9mm-pistol/ His first choice for guiding for those big bears is his rifle "Ole Ugly", which is a 458 Win Mag. Note the loads that he had developed for this situation - heavy and not HP!! I doubt he recommends a 9mm for what he did, but it was what he had, and got'er dun!! Of course, if you read his background and history, I would not give even odds on the bear, even if Shoemaker only had a rock in his hand!!

A 9mm is a poor stopper on man as history has proven. In a carbine you get more smack but I'd go .45 or 10mm to make an impression and even then pick my shots.

If you are after a light handy rifle suitable for the Charlottes and Rupert, you might want to consider a Howa mini in 7.62x 39 or 6.5 Grendel.

I'm in Rupert as well and have done the Haida Gwaii thing multiple times with rifles ranging from 9.3x57 ,30-06,270...

My Grendel showed up last night and I am truly looking forward to what I think will be an awesome answer for those little buggers over there.

My son and I each have the Howa mini in 7.62x39 and are having a blast with them at the range so far, 123gr hornady interlocks and sub moa 3 shot groups at over 2600 fps should turn them into serious black tail busters as well.

Bella Twin, here's a link to the story https://www.ammoland.com/2017/06/be...-world-record-grizzly-and-more/#axzz68Nhtb3uD

When I worked for Remote Helicopters in Slave Lake AB in the late 90's the owner Bill Lukan knew her personally and filled me in on some of the details, supposedly the hide burned in a hotel fire some years afterwards.

You are correct.
You can’t tell me you’d rather have a recurve than a .223 in just about any situation where you needed something dead. Maybe you can?
I don’t consider myself an expert. I’m just a guy in northern bc that hunts.

I’m not sure why you have such a hard on for me. There’s two other posters saying they’ve done the same thing...
Please forgive me for my sins. I’ll turn in my .223 and my 30-30 and get the newest supershortbestthingevermagnum.

You missed the point again... I really don't give a rat's ass what you use as long as it is legal, it is the faulty rationale and incorrect physics that I am challenging... and "yes," I most certainly would take a recurve over a .223 to harvest game, in fact I have done just that for more than four decades. You clearly do not understand the lethal physics at play with archery equipment.

Some people just like to pick on the new guy. :)

6.5 Grendel is one of my new favorites. It's a great answer to hunting deer or predators like wolves. And because it uses a better bullet design than the x39, it has much better ballistics. I kinda wonder if the 6.5 Grendel had come first, if any military would have even wanted a x39 or even a .223. :)

Ok. You win.

Hoytcanon has a point - a rifle and a bow are 2 completely different critters. If you want a very good example - take a 5 gallon pail full of sand, and fire any rifle into it. You'll find the bullet a few inches in. Fire an arrow into the same bucket, and you'll be picking your arrow up behind the bucket.

Thousands of bear, deer and moose were killed with the 44-40, and if you look up data for muzzleloaders typically used in the old days (38-45 cal.), you'll find that they were not that far ahead of the 9 mil. However, is there a better way to do it? Definitely. Is it ethical? That is up to you. I don't think I would use anything smaller than a 45 colt on medium game, but that's a personal determination.

Many Many moons ago I killed a whitetail doe in Montana with a 9mm handgun with a factory federal hydroshock bullet it was effective would i do it again probably not but im alot wiser now than then out of a cabine it would definately be more effective
Cheers Tony
