I would like to start measuring the speed of my reloads. Can anyone suggest a cheap chrono that works great. Thanks

Shootign Chrony

I have used mine beside 2 Oehlers and they all give the same readings.

However, I have to use a pencil to write down the velocities, rather than use the printer.

I think it's a fair excahnge for $600 difference!

I've got a Beta Master Chrony. It works OK. Though I have had a few BS readings, especially late in the day when the sun is not too high in the sky. Was easy to pick out when you get a reading of like 800 fps when all the others were 1300 fps. But it screws up the average speed readings, etc. It makes ya wonder about the accuracy of the others when that happens. The manual isn't too good either as I couldn't find a meaning for "Err2", etc. that would show up now and then. But still not too bad and it is a Canadian made product. BUT don't buy it in Canada! And don't buy it direct as their prices listed on the web site aren't too good for Canadians. They are still using a really old US to Canadian conversion rate of $1.50 Canadian for $1.00 US and when I called and asked about this they said those were the correct prices. And no I could not pay in US funds! So I bought mine from the US. I saved quite a few dollars getting it from Cabellas in the states. And their web site bites! As out dated as the prices!

Still not bad for the US money. Get the "Master" version of which ever model you want so you can read and control it remotely instead of trying to see what it says from 10' away in bright sun light. Pretty easy to add a longer wire for the remote too if you want to read further down range. Just don't shoot it!

+1 for Shooting Chrony

Plus, they're tough, mine survived a .45ACP hit (don't try to chrony immediately after a trigger job done on your gun)

Thanks for the reply's. I have seen a shooting Chrony and it looks simple and not expensive. The place I go shooting at has a huge drop 2' from the bench rest, how close can you put the chrony from the muzzle. I guess I could rig up some kind of a platform and then put the stand on it with the crony on top.

You stand the Chrony on a tripod. It has a 1/4" course threaded hole in the bottom.

Black's Camera has a tripod sale on right now.

You place the Chrony 5 to 15' from the muzzle. I use 10'.

RePete.

I use the shooting chrony as well. Make sure you pass the wires to the outside of the bodies frame hinge to one side so if you have a boo boo you don't slash the wires with a projectile. I had just enough frayed ends to patch mine backtogether.

PS-My chrony didn't survive, but I can vouch that they have good customer service!

I know a guy that has shot at least 7 of them over the years.

He also claims their customer service is #1

Don't ask how, I've hit mine at least four times! One of the rods took it for the team the first time, the whole thing spun right around on the post I had it anchored to. I replaced the rods by bending 5/32 welding rods in such a fasion as to leave a square opening to shoot through. Makes it easier for the arrows to get through too.
The top of the body has three nice copper graze marks on it but she still keeps on going! :?

Err2 means that the second photosensor didn't pick up - Err1 means that the first didn't catch the action.

For the sake of variety, I'll put in a word for CED Millennium. Its a compact unit that reads the speed (does better with the IR lit screens), talks to you, can be set up with 2,4 or 8 ft screen spacing, and sets up with the main unit well separated from the tripod mounted screens. That last feature means you've only got the relatively cheap screen(s) to replace if you happen to hit one. It calculates PF for you, has a memory, data collector software for your PC, etc. etc.

Weather or not the features are worth the extra $ depends on the user I guess but it does have features and they all work. :)

So, I got to think'n here. .
I use the shooting chrony aswell,
good rig for the most part and as $ is concerned.
but is there a proper time of day,
to use this thing ?
You know, like in sun, not in sun,
no wind or little as possible ?
The reason I'm asking is because
mine will read good, and by that I
mean, the shots will be within 10-20
fps of eachother and then out of the blue
it'll jump 100-130 fps for a shot.
I am VERY picky with my reloads,
so I am ruling them out.
Anyone else encounter this ?

I have had the best luck on dull overcast days. I have also found that it will not function under flourecent lighting. The accessory lighting kit solved this problem.
