I'm putting together a very modest cost varmint rig because it is questionable just how often I'll actually get to use it. I've got the Savage AXIS .223 and am looking for suggestions for a decent but very modestly priced scope. Top end magnification in the 16 to 24 range, optic lens around 50mm, respectable clarity & low light performance, and with a reticle that is not too "busy". I shoot by holdover, not by turret adjustment.

After swearing never to buy another Tasco POS, I of all things, picked up a used one from a CGN ad much to my trepidation. Have had it out twice to the range and have come to the conclusion that he duped me. It had trouble with the right-left turret moving POA and POI seems to jump around. I can get a few shots to form a ragged hole but then it jumps 4-6 inches away at 100 yrds. I should have known better

Id stay away from Bushnell and Crapco or the lower end stuff...

The Burris is a good option in the price range if thats enough magnification for you.

You should not need more than that for a Varmint rig. ;)

See if you can find a Bushnell Elite Tactical, or a Vortex Viper series. I think they offer best value and best optics for the price range.

r204, We are being asked to believe that he received 5 bad Minox scopes in a row. 5!! BS! I have the exact same 1.5-8 X that he claims to have started with.
It's been on my Ruger #1 in 303 for the last 2 years and has been flawless.
Someone has an axe to grind.

I didn't start that thread nor did I post in it, so what are you jumping all over me for? I just think it might be worth a look for someone considering buying one

It's beyond me, how you can think I'm "jumping on you". I was responding to the thread which you linked. If I was "jumping on you", I would have said you claim, not "he claims". Reread my post.
Thanks for reminding me why I rarely post in this zoo.

I guess it was the tone of your post. It just seened like shoot the messenger kind of post thats all. All I know is then I am looking at purchasing an item I look at all the reveiws the good and the bad and I certainly do not turn a blind eye to neggative reveiws just because I happen to have that item or really want to purchase it. I am also sure there is just as many bullchit positive reveiws as there are neggative ones.

I have a couple of Tasco scopes on small caliber rifles no problems with them usually, cheap glass isn't great at high magnification. No such thing as a good cheap scope imo. I will be looking at Vortex for my next purchase.

The Burris Fullfield II was on my shortlist when I initially posted. I finally decided on that one in 4.5-14x42 with the ballistic plex reticle. I almost went with their 6.5-20x50 but the simplicity of the ballistic plex over the mil-dot and the $100 difference made me choose the 4.5-14x42. It's just for a coyote poker and paper perforator.

Thanks for all the replies. It should get here mid-week. My club range only has a 100 yard max, but I hope to get it zeroed within the next couple of weeks, not that I'll be doing any coyote hunting this spring at this late juncture.

Let us know how you like it.

I've got a cheap tasco 25-40 on my .223 and it works fine. The lack of recoil allows for a cheap scope.

That was my original justification for opting for the used Tasco pos. Going for a cheap item, I guess one should at least buy new and get some kind of warranty, and this was the first (possibly only) purchase through the CGN EE. I'm just not convinced it's worth buying anything used that cannot be fully demonstrated before completing the transaction.
