Always been a handgun plinker but would like to acquire some long guns for range use (not a hunter). My budget is 1500 - 2000 (max w/o scope). Would like something that looks purty, is fun to shoot, stands up over time, and holds value if not appreciate. Have been checking out Henrys but open to all advice and input.

Thanks in advance from a newbie to this site.

what caliber?

cant go wrong with a win/miroku 1892 in 357

A Winchester Model 94....
Spend half of what your budget is and have fun shooting it.
Pre 64 and shop in the EE, you will find lots to choose from and it will not disappoint.
Of course , it is your money , your choice of flavor.
Suffice to say I will not nor have I offered anything other than my .02 worth of opinion .
Take it for what it is worth.

Because I've had mucho handguns over the years I thought I'd go for a rifle caliber e.g. 45-70 (but open for suggestions). I did just buy my first rifle a Rem 783 30-06 (yeah, I know lol).

Win 94. Pre64 ideally.

I owned 3 now. They carry and handle surprizing well.

I also like the early savage 99 or an win 1895

A win92 is nice as well

Thanks guys. I should clarify what I mean by "collectibles". I'm fine with buying new, just something that might hold it's value and perhaps be a collectible if I pass it on to a family member one day.

If you want something that will appreciate in value, get a pre-'64 Winchester. Second choice, an early ('50's) Marlin 336, but they don't hold the same collector value as a Winchester, rightly or wrongly.

So many choices. I like bigger bullets so 35 rem is nice 44 mag is fun 4570 in an 1886 nice and fun with cast bullets nd black powder. My favourite modern cart is 444 marlin lots of power and recoil not too bad, usually very accurate too. 44 mag is fairly inexpensive to run as well. All good.

How about 450 marlin.. fun fun fun..
There is a winney short rifle for sale ..
Gun dealer.net out of N.B.
Just bought on for my self,
add it to the stable of big bores..lol
44 mag is nice also. Easier on the wallet,
Also like my marlin 1895M as cartridge..

I would also add Uberti 1860, 1866 or the 1873 to that list as well. Fun as all hell to shoot and some of the nicest looking levers on the market

Yes, looking at Uberti especially the 1873. I love the throwbacks, just bought a Pietta Traditions 357 wheel gun.

Great input by all - really appreciated. Have decided against getting a Henry. So many choices so little time (and bucks!)

Why no Henry? I am also a little surprised that it didn't get mentioned. Probably is the best new lever being offered right now, out of the box.

Collector value is mentioned, and you could probably buy just about anything, and have good residual value. But if you want something that will appreciate, look for something that isn't being made any longer. Pre-64 Winchester was mentioned, as 64 onward, Winchester cheapened their manufacturing process and switched from a forged steel receiver to a cast receiver. Marlin did not do that, and was always an "all steel gun". But they did have issues after Remington bought them. Look for the older "JM" stamped Marlins, and some will say a bit older is better. I'd say buy a pre-cross bolt safety rifle. Hard to beat a Marlin.

Are you looking to mount a scope on it? That may influence which model is ideal. You mentioned the 45-70, but do you reload? If not, you may not find it to be ideal for fooling around with. Ammo has gotten expensive for it. Is it going to be a hunting rifle, or mainly a range gun? The 30-30 is relatively inexpensive for rifle cartridges, but .44 Mag, or .357 is much cheaper to feed.

Also, as mentioned Savage 1899 is a well made gun, that can be gotten fairly cheaply, and will not go down in value. Also the Winchester/Browning 1895.
