I am new to small game hunting and would like to go for some coyote this summer. All I have experience with is deer so I thought I would get some information from this site.

It seems that most people do this in the fall or winter, is that simply to get better pelts from them? Or is there some other reason I should know about? I have been told that coyote are considered a "nuisance animal" and therefore if hunted the hunter is not required to prepare the meat or do anything productive with the pelt. Is this correct? Finally, I don't want to put out all the money for a FoxPro right now, does anyone have any reccomendations on a more economical call system or hunting method? I really want to be successful so any other tips would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Summer coyotes pelts are useless.
Grass is too high, hard to see them coming in
Too hot, Coyotes aren't as responsive to the calls in the summer like they are in the winter
Leave them were you drop them as long as its not in someones field.

You don't need a foxpro, Mine sat most of last winter, used hand calls every time I went out pretty much

Go out right now since a lot of the hay is out, watch fields at dusk and dawn, they will be out mousing.

Calling coyotes will definitely still work right now, Much harder though, they are hard enough to pick out when the ground is completely white, imagine what its like with grass and leaves.

Good luck and shoot every coyote you see.

I live in SW Ontario, last few years every one I shot had serious case of mange, pelts are useless every season of the year.

Thanks for the input.

I have a tree stand I use for deer that is along the tree line in a hydro line clearing. I am thinking about hunting from there. Is baiting them a legal option in Ontario? If so what materials would you reccomend?

That sums it up pretty good, not much to add after this.

I have friends who hunt them every month of the year..

Now is a good time just use a fawn in distress call and it works like a charm!

check out h ttp://www.carverpredatorcalls.com/ (delete the space from the http of course). Kerry is a great guy who sells fantastic, hand made calls, which are priced VERY well for the quality. you can get yourself a nice set up for under $50, and shipping was free last time i checked.

Okay thanks I am checking it out now. Is there any call you'd reccomend for a novice? And it says free shipping but he is based in the US. Did you get shipping to Canada for free?

I too have ordered calls from him in the past and I believe it was free shipping from the US to Canada. He is a great guy to deal with and even e-mailed me afterwards just to make sure everything was to my satisfaction.

Baiting is legal...any meat product should do the trick.

leaving them where you shoot them is illegal in ontario you have to skin them and have the hides tanned no matter what its still a furbearer and by law needs to be skinned for its pelt

I was out 2 days ago and set 2 stands and called in two coyotes and the weather was +27. If actually find summer and fall really productive as there is next to no hunting pressure and fall the pups are out. I pretty much all my hunts for predator control. By the time you factor in all your gas, time, ammo, meals out there is not much money in it.
I've had numerous Foxpros and also go back to my hand calls. Get a Dan Thompson Red desert Howler, a Critr call Mag and Peewee, and maybe a Sceery and you'll have more then enough great hand calls.
Im considering the new Fury w/ Foxbang that just came out July 1, looks deadly and price is now $500 but wont feel like Im missing something if I dont.
Just a note that eastern calling is no where near as easy as calling out west so dont get discouraged when you see us western guys get 8-10 dogs a day, its just easier out here.

you guys mite want to read the hunting regulations here if you would like to keep hunting furbearers are furbearers they're pelts legaly need to be preserved (even a fleshing and drying would do it) of corse i dont recommend touching the ones with mange(real deal magne you will know when you see it) what i recommend in that situation is call the CO report it and then bury it

If you guys are hunting dufferin/simcoe counties I'd love to tag along for lessons. We had a coyote take a jack russel in town here, I'd like to keep them out of town!

Tree stands work great in the summer, the elevation is an advantage for wind as well as visibility over the tall brush. But it is better suited for E-callers, hand calling from a stand can be a challenge, coyotes are not stupid and can pinpoint a sound, most are smart enough to know a distressed rabbit will not be 35 feet in a tree and will see it as a warning sign, not only will they avoid it now, but you will educate them to your own sound when you do make it to the ground to call in future hunts.
In the summer I place meat scraps in a small section of fence, wrap it up and chain it to a tree, keeps them around a while longer opposed to them just dragging the bait away.
Your responsibility as a hunter is to utilize the animal once it is dispatched, some choose to skin them, others choose to use them for bait for the next hunt.
