Summerland Long Range Fun Shoot 2008 - April 12, 13th

Ken & Barbie

Some of the guys were nice enough to bring something for us to shoot at. Thanks again for bringing quality steel we couldn't absolutely des-troy with our guns.

A couple of the guys found two plastic dolls and it wouldn't be a target rich environment if we didn't have targets so this is the story. VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED!!!!!

We positioned them in such a way that we might take them both out in one good shot. They were set up 800yds out and a bunch of us with 308s went to work on them.

I was the first to spin the two and then Jim Sharpe knocked them down. C4Pyro continued to pumble them while they lay on the ground. Sunday afternoon while they sat atop the propane bottle, out of nowhere a 338LM AI round ended it all with a double head shot. This is all that was left of the wrechage.

And that was the end of that.

Last but no least, the propane tank. We first spotted it on Friday at about 1100yds. We spent time making hits on it at that distance with everything from 308, 300WM to 338LMAI. It wasn't until Sat. morning that we found that at that distance, the 308s bounced off while the 300WM using Bergers 110gr punched one side while the 300gr SMK drilled through both sides. We then hauled it up to the 800yd mark and painted it up. Here are some pics.

The 408 is not done! It is just getting stated. It was right there with the 50 cals and now with the ready supply of bullets and brass available in Canada....look out. At the Summerland shoot.. the 408 shot well at 1760 yards. It got there faster than the 50's, with less elevation required and less recoil. Don't get me wrong, I still love my 50, but I like the 408 too.

The 408 is a great alternative to the BMG. Can use standard actions (maybe not????) and most importantly, Large Rifle Primers. The 338AI/Edge/Mystic are awesome too for LR hammer work.

Hope to finally get some time to finish my 338 Mystic and see how it does.

Any chance of posting bullet costs so that we can make a good comparisons between these monsters.

Would also like if you could post your ballistic info for your 408 bullets and reloads (fps?). I was very impressed when I shot it.

Nice rig, nice load, big smack on rock at 1450yds.

Jerry

Two were built on bruno 550 action, which is now available in 505 Gibbs, (which gives you the right sized bolt face). The third one we built was on an EDM Arms 50 action. Works well, but is far too large. Yes, large magnum rifle primers. We drive the 385 gr solids at approx. 2850 fps with 123 grains of reloader 22. The ballistic co-efficient is .805. They (408) retail for $99 for 50 vs the 50's at $79 for 20 (50's comes with primers too). So, about half the cost of the 50 for all the fun in the sun. Swagged bullets, soon to come, will be more cost effective.

By the way, that's my 408 in the picture with my buffalo. Yes, I did shoot the buffalo with the 408 at about 300 meters and no meat was lost. Can't beat that.

Got to shoot the 408, both the EDM Arms action and with the Bruno action (thanks a lot guys)! Both were very pleasing to shoot, recoil was very easy to handle, and both guns were very accurate.

If the local Shuswap boys keep working at producing the 408 cal bullets, have brass available, this round should grow across Canada. Don't rule out the 408, it certainly has promise and loads of potential.

There are a few solid actions available which will support this cartidge, AND, ATRS is will be producing their own action shortly. I have no doubt you'll be able to snag one in a 408 bolt face if you ask nice!

Though I do love my Lapua, I think it's good that we have a Canadian company bringing to life, the 408. We hope to be able to offer an action within the year that will accommodate a 408 bolt face. I think we should openly accept this new comer to the big boomer race and show the states what Canada is really about. Hey, if guys have the money to keep this rifle booming, good on ya.

Cheers.

Sweet, sounds like another success! Way to got Jerry!

Great pics all! Would love to see some videos!

Hope I can fit Summerland 2009 into my work, and my wifes vacation schedule! :D

And if you guys are all wondering why Rick is the only one with a steak left on his plate while everyone else is done.....its because he liked it so much, he ordered a second....hehe. Its nice when BC people realize that Alberta beef is really that good....(they imported it from AB)

that weekend didn`t look like much fun at all...
just a bunch of gun people, talking about guns, playing with guns, shooting guns at ridiculous distances, eating good food and drinking cold beverages.
