Summerland Long Range Fun Shoot 2008 - April 12, 13th

Yeah, I did not feel like celebrating too much... I had "problems" hitting consistently at a mile. I was fine at 1500 but had not had time to shim my scope enough so although I did make the trip to the mile and did hit the target, I do not consider it a success as the consistancy was not there. My fault for not shimming, the .223 cartridge is quite capable of doing it.

We had loads of wind as well which was coming from the rear of the mile target area and wrecking havoc on the smaller bullets. That wind was strong and inconsistent, it followed the ridge of the hilltop and swirled all over the mile marker. 1500 was more sheltered and not a problem. The kilometer was a nice leasurely shoot...:D

All in all a stock Savage, non-bedded rifle performed fantastically, as they all seem to do.

Lionhill showed me up on the 500 meter line and destroyed a whack of clays with both his .223 and .308. For a guy who uses a Palm Pilot to dial in he sure can shoot!!!:sniper:

This was a great two days shoot, as usual! Jerry rocks and all the players were delightful people with a strange addiction to shooting longer distances!

It was a pleasure meeting new attendees as well as seeing the repeat visitors. I am so looking forward to next year!!!:)

I DID take 1 out with the intent to see how it works, but there just was not an opportunity to shoot groups at a hundred yards without messing up Jerry's shoot, so I will have to hold off for another trip to the range.

The 408 certainly looked like it was heading for the same pile as the dinosaurs litter, with Accurate Bullet Co. coming out with bullets made here in Canuckistan, that certainly breathes some fresh air into it. I was talked into making a run of actions for the 408, so there may in fact be something betwwen the 338s and the 50s again.

Max, there will always be those who want HORSEPOWER but are turned off by the hassle factor of the BMG. Money no object type of shooters.

If we can get components and actions (both likely resolved) IN Canada, why not?

The BMG primer will always be its archilles heel (that might also be resolved). Import rules can change in a heart beat and then what do we do.

The LR primer should never face the same levels of restrictions so you can always make noise. That is well worth the security when you consider the investment in hardware.

Plus they shoot awfully well (johblack thanks for your info - very exciting numbers). Certainly on par with the 338 monsters.

NO worries, there is still plenty of concussion and noise to satisfy that part of the experience....

About as popular as 50s maybe, still a small market I believe.

Brass and guns will still be pricey, bullets still more expensive than 338s due to their custom made nature, but at least the caliber has some chance up here now, where previously it did not.
 
Great vids! Thanks for posting. Sounds like you all had some difficulty spotting hits. Not surprising under the circumstances.

There were a few top quality, high power spotting scopes which made that possible.

Once we got the spotters dialed in on the targets spotting the hits and calling the in was not that difficult. I managed to walk my 300WM out to 1780yrds and hit a rock with a good degree of accuracy. 17Mils elevation on my scope and an additional hold over of almost 6 Mils. Once I got the hold I was in business.

Danger Deb and LRC also walked their 300Win Mags out that far. I think LRC or Deb may have gone even farther on the second day.

The 408Chey Tac and 50 BMGs were making some really long shots and hitting man sized targets with ease. I got to shoot the 408 at the same rock as my 300WM. Amazing what a whole pile more horsepower does for yah. 408 is just getting warmed up at that distance. Same for the 50's

I was thinking that the shot followed by that hilarious question played over and over all on it's own would make a sweet video :)

I finally saw the video everyone is talking about and had to say that was pretty funny. I went from teeing that rock up centered to 'who the hell know where that one went???"
I think those are the joys of ball ammo unfortunately. great video Brian. I wish someone would have gotten a video of me destroying the propane tank and the scuba tanks. Next year. Next Year It'll be different.
 
Looks (and sounds) like you guy's had a great weekend, hopefully next years event won't coincide with our local F-Class match so I can make it down.
