Summerland Long Range Fun Shoot 2008 - April 12, 13th

What? No drugs or alcohol? That takes all the fun out of it. If I can't smoke a bowl, down a few bottles of Rev, and shoot a precision rifle then I'm not coming!!!! :onCrack:

Forgot I had some pics in my camera so here they are.

Got a quiet afternoon so headed up to look and measure some targets.

LRC, Congratulations, you did hit that survey stake at 1550yds!!!!!

You just caught an edge and likely knocked the stake over too (?). There were lots of impact craters nearby so you were very close many times. SWAG about 6 to 8" across. Nice shooting in the winds.

If you look at the extreme range pasture, you can see the really big lone pine tree on the right side. Go left and there is a short pine tree that looks like a Qtip more or less in the center of the pasture. That ranges at 2.13km (2339yds).

If you go left a bit and back, there is a scrawny tree. This ranges at 2.17km (2385yds). Not alot of difference as the crow flies.

I don't remember which rocks you guys were shooting at as there were a few between these two trees. At least you have a ballpark range now.

The 'mile rock' ranges in at a tasty 2.36km (2592yds). That we most certainly will have to target next year!

All distances ranged with a GPS so there is some room for measurement error.

Speaking of the mile rock, I went to see if the 80gr Amax had left any marks. I happy to say, it most certainly did.

There were two clusters, one in the center and one on the right. This agrees with the video footage. Each cluster had a few hits in it and were under 2" across.

The CtoC of the clusters was 7" apart with almost no difference in vertical.

I am thrilled that I have a group of sorts at 1 mile with my 223.

Unless there are more pics, this pretty much wraps up the event.

Looking forward to next year already.

The format will change with Sat at the flat and the 'short' distances and Sunday shooting extreme range.

We now have a clear spot and nice large rock at almost 2600yds. If we really want to get creative we might even be able to reach out a bit further.

I know I will be trying to get out to 2600yds as soon as I can build in more UP.

I knew it, It just felt good :D:D:D!! ,But that info was supposed to stay between us :slap:!!

Now I'm going to have to listen to a bunch of people telling me a .300wm won't make that trip accurately.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out Jerry, now I got some new goals to beat for next year off the ridge. Looking forward to it.:dancingbanana:

Hey, next time I am up there I will pick up that stake for your collection. No one will believe you but who cares. We know you hit it.

As for fun next year, we can put a pop can on that rock at 2400yds and you guys can take turns trying to hit it.

First one to hit it gets to share in the 'pot'.

Did I hear a wager????????

Make sure you have enough elevation for 2600yds and further. There is a hillside BEYOND the saddle.

Me thinks it would be well over 3000yds :)

Time to break out the WILD rangefinder....

Just wait a min I was shooting at it to and I told LRC that I hit it but he didnt believe me so I think I got it.....:dancingbanana:

Deb, there were several hits on the rock so some could have been yours too. That would be great shooting. It is a small rock given the distance.

Oh well, thought it was just the 223 smacking that rock.

Good shooting.... We are going to have to make up some gopher/marmot sized targets for the mile.

A 10" X 5" and 8"X3" target would be pretty challenging at a mile!

Well....it's -36C right now and I'm already thinking of this shoot for next year. Anyways, the Summerland shoot for me is one of those must do things for 2009. I tried reading every post looking for the dates for next year (09). I'd sure like to know if anything has been finalized yet 'cause I know of at least 3 unruly Alberta boys that want to go this year that never had a chance last year. What ever you do....please don't tell me it's in May or June...please.:sniper:

April is the best time for the shoot at our location. We Usually have good ground conditions at that time. Last year was perfect conditions. I am sure if it Mystic decides to put the shoot on this year it will be April. Anything in the later warmer months, there is more traffic in the area. Its harder to predict where people will be. Motocross, campers, ATV, etc. It is public land.
