Summerland Long Range Fun Shoot - CANCELED, Sorry guys

Hi Jerry,
I'm from W Kelowna and just got wind of the shoot date yesterday. Do you have room for one more? If so, please let me know and I'll fire off the cheque as soon as I hear from you. I'm new to long range centerfire shooting but I'm itching to give it a go!

You still set on the rebar a-frame idea? I might do the same but with 1"square tube. I happen to have a bunch of it on hand. Also, I just found some 3" round circles as well. I think they might be a bit small but I might make them into mini-gongs for the 500-600 range.

I can also make shapes as well. If you can think of any fun shapes to shoot at, let me know and I'll see what I can do. If I had an extra sheet kicking around, I'd make a full sized deer or something and set it wayout there

+shooting bambi would be AWESOME!!!!!!!

a chrony would be nice too.

Hey Jerry

Can you post some pics of the holders that you made out of 2X4's for the gong's??? I have some around my place and my have some time to make some up.

My idea was to put two 2x4's to form a T, then a piece of plywood/OSB to bridge the T junction to reinforce.

Drill a hole through both uprights for the rebar/pipe cross rail and hammer a couple more 2x4's across the legs (front and back) to form the base. Space about 2ft between the uprights to limit hits.

Haven't made any yet but figure this is an easy enough design to slap together in a few minutes with a chop saw.

So, how are all the targets supposed to get way out there?? Are we going to walk them out there? Or could we pack everything into a quad with a trailer and haul it out that way?? Being able to go out on a quad to repaint/fix/check targets would be much nicer then hoofin it around on foot the whole time

The shortest hillside is foot only.

That is why things have to be portable and easy to set up. gongs shouldn't weigh a ton.

Repainting is rarely done. Maybe at the lunch time break. It really isn't needed.

One area is not readily accessible and why I need to get the a few gongs shortly. Have to hike in to set them up.

The final extreme range area has decent access. The furthest area can be driven into but there is still alot of walking to get to various distances.

50lbs gongs are nice but not easily useable.

Lighter better. They don't have to last beyond the weekend.

The quad will be very useful and some areas needed. However, alot of the terrain is foot traffic only and chewing it up is a great way to get a CO kicking us off the property for good.

On Sat. morning, all those able bodies will be able to help set up the various targets in very short order. Why any gong has to be able to be set up with min. tools and fuss.

Will need some help Sat. afternoon to move some gongs to the extreme range hillside. A quad would be very useful here to ferry stuff from the access road to the actual target site.

Then there will be the clean up. More hands make light work......

Anyways, let me know when you are free to meet. Time is ticking by and I want to get some smaller gongs so I can hike in and have them set up as soon as roads have melted.

Area is still under alot of snow and roads are not passable but hopefully that will change by the end of March.

Everyone think, warm thoughts...

Jerry

Not a stupid question at all.

We have road crews on the main access road to hold traffic while we do a cease fire.

IF someone does want to go through, we cannot stop them.

In general traffic this early in the year is very low BUT we have lost time in previous years to traffic.

Big reason why we shoot with spotters - just in case there is traffic.

Why all shooters need to have their liability insurance in place as they do if they went hunting or shooting on crown land.

i will get to work on them gongs tomorrow hopefully. i wasn't supposed to work but i am now. ill gonna try and do a half day and then jump right into those gongs. but we shall see. either way, ill get them done this weekend amongst all the other stuff i need to do as well. And one of those things is buying a new rifle!!

so, im at work right now, just waiting for paint to dry on the gongs. As you said before, they are as follows, 2-6", 2-10" and 1-14". If you want to make frames with wood, that might be good for these as i have 2, 16"lengths of 1/8" aircraft cable on each gong with a mounting plate that you would just need to screw into a 2x4 or some other chunk of wood. Heres a pic while im waiting for the paint to dry. just laying out the mounting brackets as i type this. i made one into a frog just cause.

and this is what the mounting plate is going to look like. just attach to a 2x4 with 3 wood screws and off you go. Simple enough i would think. sure saves on weight. im just going to use some 16ga galvanized for them.

and for the complete ones. I tested them out in the shop with a ball peen hammer and i think my ears might be bleeding a little. There is nothing for the sound to escape on, like a big heavy chain or re bar so it is essentially....... a gong.

Well...those are Kewl!!

might i recomend...perhaps drilling a second set of holes in the 'anchor' and running a second set of hanger wires at a different angle?

its amazing how bullets will magically gravitate to those little wires....a second set would be cheap insurance

it only take one cut wire to make the plate useless
