I tried the search function but it must be busted. Not sure if its been posted but here it is.

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Convention is this weekend in Moose Jaw and word is the Minister of Environment will announce Sunday hunting will be allowed starting this fall.

The announcement is supposed to be made during the banquet Saturday night and should be a nice way to end the evening. This is something we've been pushing for for years here in Saskatchewan.

I did a little more poking at my source who says this will not be like it was out east when they phased it in over a couple of years, he says it will be an all out lifting of the ban.

This is not just bar room rumour. He is a 100 percent reliable source on the inside. Its a great day for hunters in Saskatchewan.

That is fantastic for all of us working stiffs

Even more so to those with school age hunting kids. It can be rough to get a few days off from work, but missing school might be impossible. I think we've missed our best arguement by always working the working guy angle, while the Wildlife Federation is dominated by rural people, many of whom have realized that no Sunday hunting cuts down on the hunting competition.
"Think of the children" might be our best point, one that the self appointed sportsman spokesman group will have a harder time countering. As far as I'm concerned if it wasn't for the SWF we would have had Sunday hunting 20 years ago.

That is not a fair statement to make. The group has done what they could and they have used the what about the kids angle.

Be happy that this has finally happened.

From about 1959 I used to go back with my wife to her folks in the Quill Lakes area and hunt ducks and geese. The first year I asked the game warden why they didn't have Sunday hunting. His story was that if you hunted the geese every day, they would leave the country!
Smart geese. I guess they would tell each other, "Only two more days, then we get a day of rest!"

You can bet it isnt going to go over well for the first few years. There are still avid church goers in the rural areas, and people that plain just dont want to be bothered on a Sunday wether it be someone knocking on the door or the phone ringing for permission or the sound of gun shots on a quiet Sunday.I probably wont hunt Sundays just for those reasons but I can see those with time restraints can make good use of it.

no sunday hunting here yet. Im not sure why. I can target practise all day long and no complains. There are hardly any people go to church anymore. Our local church has many 30 regulars and maybe 65 people on a special day like christmas or easter. The minister is proposing that the 3 semi-local churches all go together because of lack of people at each church and rising costs.

just a matter of time before sunday hunting is around here as well :)

It's about time

I had understood that Nova Scotia and us in Saskabush were the last holdouts. Maybe now not so many will give up hunting as I have seen in the last 10-15 years. Kinda hard to get excited about 1 day a week in a 2- 3 week season, Bravo I say.:dancingbanana:

I attended a meeting of the hunter educators in Saskatchewan in the mid-90's. The question was asked then. Naturally, two lines formed behind the microphones. Those of us who wanted to hunt on Sundays (working during the week, more opportunities for entry hunters, better distribution of hunters away from the cities, more effective use of vacation time, etc). Those who didn't want to hunt on Sundays (give the animals a day of rest!, give the fish cops a day of rest, respect for the Sabbath, disruptions in rural communities, etc). We did not have a single voice then, what is to say the SWF has one now?

You are correct Maple Leaf. There still are the "Sunday is a day of rest people" out there and land will get posted "No Hunting" over Sunday hunting. After saying that however 99% of them are great people and we have to respect thier decisions.

There is pros and cons to Sunday Hunting I am on the side of the cons.In our area we have bow Hunting on Sunday, but gun hunting is not here yet.
We hunt on a lot of Mennonite lands and are not sure how that might fly.
We are also near a city so the 1 acre ass hats would be #####ing all the time.

Yeah! And they seemed to have no problems with getting that day of rest in a crowded bar on a Sunday afternoon, either. Yeesh.

Whatever the reason, and however it made it through, good! Enjoy! No putting the genie back into the bottle, eh!

Cheers

As far as I'm concerned if it wasn't for the SWF we would have had Sunday hunting 20 years ago.

One of the main reasons this took so long to be implemented was the presence of one long term NDP cabinet minister who was dead against Sunday hunting.

Other than the SWF, there are few voices for the hunters in SK. Any other groups representing hunters are rather small in comparison, both in numbers and clout.

Boy do I hope this turns out. It is impossible for me to have any kind of elk or moose hunt because of work. At least now I can get in a day and a half on weekends and my son can join in as well. Around here we hunt mainly on crown land so land owners won't be bothered.

Heck the first nations have always been able to hunt on Sundays so what difference should it make.

Nice to see Sask. pull its head out of its old socialist a**

The main enemy of Sunday hunting everywhere has always been the outfitters/guides. They use Sun. as the day to change out hunters and don't want locals hunting their areas, using their blinds or generally doing anything when they have no control. They don't want to have their day off spoiled by having to chase hunters off 'their territory' In SK. the outfitters had the NDP by the balls and no one seems to know why. Also, the ex premier Calvert is a united church minister. The time has come. Mark

it will be a war zone on sundays. As every hunter from the city will be out. Sunday will be my day of hunting rest. As i use all 4 weeks of my holidays for hunting. But will get a few more kids out which is a good thing
