Sunday Hunting

NL has no Sunday hunting from April to the first Sunday of October. For most of moose, caribou, waterfowl, and small game season there is Sunday hunting.

Here is a link to Ontario municipalities that allow Sunday hunting south of the French and Mattawa rivers.

Just curious folks, what provinces DON"T allow Sunday hunting? I know my own province of Nova Scotia doesn't but are there any others? A liberal MPP here is supposedly proposing legislation to allow it and I'm looking for info to argue with the people who oppose it.

How about this. The charter of rights clearly forbids this and gives us all religous freedom, or the freedom not to be religous.

What kind of gov't has laws on their books that are clearly infringe on our charter rights and depend on the fact nobody will hire a lawyer to fight it ?

NS and PEI are the 2 most religious provinces in Canada. I worked in Summerside on a 3 week straight turnaround. The couple bible thumpers there hated us for working on Sunday. Oh well.

PEI has no problems infringing on charter rights:

Sunday Hunting
Sunday shopping
Double taxation for non-residents

Well I can only hunt on the weekends and so since the hunting season is so short I'm inclined to believe that since I can bank and shop on Sunday why not hunt? It used to be because you were supposed to be in church on Sunday. But who goes to church anymore? Don't know about you but there's plenty of other Sundays to waste in church that's not in my hunting season.

Saskatchewan had a ban on Sunday hunting for probably 75 years.
When I used to go back there in the fall for goose and duck hunting, I had some good arguments with the conservation officers about it.
Their argument was that religon had nothing to do with it, but they had really stupid reasoning for preventing Sunday hunting. They claimed if geese were shot at every day, they would leave the area! I didn't think geese could count to six, then say, "Goody, goody, we won't get shot at tomorrow!"
However, big game hunting was also six days a week, but I think that gradually changed, before they moved into full Sunday hunting.
In short, there is no reasonable reason that Sunday hunting should be banned, but I think the powers to be had too much ego to admit they were in error for a lifetime.

The major reason for hanging on to Sunday hunting was the way in which regulations were determined. The NDP held power for many years and regulations were set by a board of stake holders representing hunters farmers guides and so on. Also, the NDP were heavily influence by bible belt groups with heavy agricultural roots who were against Sunday hunting. Outfitters liked Sunday as a turn around day. Those who pushed for it were always outnumbered and for many years did not even bother pushing.

Things changed over time and finally it was allowed because those who wanted it finally outnumbered those who wanted to keep it. The actual government never really cared one way or another. It was simply special interest groups with influence that kept it in for so long.
