"Super grade" sks . Bad joke ?

I ordered myself a so called super grade sks from cabelas on Black Friday . This is my first sks . I was a little reluctant ordering one online without getting to look it over and pick a nice one ... So that's why I opted to pay the extra $50 and get a super grade . Thinking this would assure I got a nice one . The website said these are premium grade unissued hand picked rifles.
Well like I said .... It's my first sks and I've never really looked one over before so I have nothing to compare it to . But this can't be the cream of the crop when it comes to these guns .
I know very little about these guns . Kinda bought it on a whim cuz of how cheap they are ... And what little I have read online about them has been positive . They are cheap.. Reliable and fun to shoot . So figured splurge for a super grade and I couldn't go wrong .
Well I think they went through the whole lot and picked the biggest turd they could find and shipped it to me as a bad joke.
The stock is rough . The fore end where it meets the barrel is all hacked up and looks like it was chiselled with a dull screw driver . The barrel and bayonet look like they are painted black . Not totally sure .. But doesn't look like blueing on any of my other guns . the date on top is 1954 but all the other pieces say 1985 . Not sure if this is a serial number or possibly the date it was refurbed ? 1985 is also scratched into the side of the barrel . Like it was just scratched in with knife or something by a 6 year old . Also the but stock end plate is worn looking with chipped paint and rust .
Now if I would of just opted for a regular sks and paid a bargain price I woulda still be dissapointed , but would probably live with it considering it's a used surplus rifle . But this seems pretty sad for a so called "super grade" so I guess what I'm asking is.... Am I being too critical of a surplus gun ? Or did I get scammed like I think I did ? The gun is going back either way cuz if this is a good one ... Then I don't want an sks .
Only reason I took a chance on ordering one online is the nearest place I can buy one is a 2 hour drive away . Now I gotta make that drive anyways to take it back and try to pick one that's decent ... Or just get my money back .
Is there any tips you guys can give me to pick a good one when I return this junk ? Any years better than others ? Anything I can look for that will indicate a true unissued rifle ? Like I mentioned ..my bayonet blade is the same black at the barrel and everything else . Looks painted . Most pics of sks I've seen the blade part is silver or polished looking . Is this a particular model ? Or is mine painted like I think ?
Anyways .. It's going back tomorrow . Any tips you guys could offer me to pick a good one would be much appreciated . Thanks

My advice? Buy on the EE, from people with good trader ratings, guns with lots of detail photos. Ask questions about any functional or cosmetic issues. I have not once felt ripped off in years of EE shopping.

Order from corwin. How much did you pay if it was over 200 and what you explained you got a little bit of a bad deal. The vendors have been saying for some time they are starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel and the quality will continue to decline. Every super grade I got from Corwin was beautiful. Tradex has some good deals from time to time with ammo and free shipping I hear. Canada ammo, west rifle. Wiemajack. If they will take it back send it back if you paid 200 or less I'd just keep it and shoot it join the Ee and keep your eyes open for unique and nice ones.

It sucks that Cabela's screwed you over.

My suggestion is either keep it as a beater and shoot the hell out of it or sell it and buy a nice one from the dealers on this site.

Sounds like you have a rather ordinary SKS, not a supergrade but not a really bad one either. 1985 will be part of the serial number, roughness is
kind of typical with SKS. We love them for what they are, an inexpensive fun gun with history.

I had an sks sent to me in the early days of the first bulk Russians that looked like it was dipped in liquid rubber. Some they grind the bolt or bayo to remove that black stuff. You really have to look in person. I'd say you got the worst quality grade. Send it back.
. I sand blasted that sks and blasted the stuff off and blued it. Now I like it but I have a loose lam stock that let's the action move around that I might have noticed in person and avoided. Sks can have a beautiful blueing and the hardwood stocks gorgeous. When there check for what I said. You'll notice shiny bolt(good) with wire brush marks(bad) tight fit in stock, nice trigger all the same no. No electro pencil. The rest is up to you
PS give up on the unissued part

Cabela's is a mistake all-around. They wanted to charge me over $100 shipping on #11 caps ($10) because they were "dangerous goods". They'll rip you off at every opportunity. There's tons of sponsors here on the forum where you can buy a really nice SKS.

Wow your shipping was quick! Ordered the regular laminate last Saturday and it hasn't even shipped as of Thursday. My first one from them was really nice. I'll let you know what I get this time.
Cheers

I gave up on cabelas for an sks purchase. Had one come and it was painted rather than blued as the discription stated. I called them and after few emails and pictures traded back and forth, they sent me a 50$ gift card and told be to return the riffle. Fair enough. The second one showed up in worse shape than the first one, still painted, rust and crud in the action and a hole ground in the gas tube. I sent that one back too. I ended up just buying one locally and am happy I did so.

Yikes! Return it. Don't even think about it. The SKS is a great rifle but your better off buying from a site sponsor. Corwin arms, or west rifle have great stuff! Sounds like a marketing ploy from the big box stores. Let them sell they're 870's benellis and savage axis. When it comes to milsurps stick to the mom and pop LGS

With Cabelas you always have the option to return it, they have good customer service standards. If you paid for a 'Super Grade' and got a low quality (ie. bbq paint) SKS then let Cabelas know - they might even make it up to you.

It is difficult for anyone to give any type of opinion on your SKS without a few pictures to look at, so if you could post pictures the guys here will share some good information about your carbine with you :)

In the meantime, in case you have not yet read this, here is a link with lots of useful info on the SKS. (Sorry didn't know I couldn't link that forum.)

Thanks for the info guys . I wish I had researched the sks more than I did and got one from one of the site sponsors like you guys mentioned . If I ever buy another I will go that route for sure .
Like I said .. I kinda bought this on a whim . Knew nothin about them and figured by getting a super grade, that it would take the risk out of getting a dud .
I'd post pics if I had a clue how . Haha !
Anyways I am definitely returning this one . If they have any nice ones I will exchange it for one . If they are all as sad looking as this one I will be getting my money back and buying one elsewhere .
Wish I had bought one years ago when I first found out about them . Sounds like thats when all the good ones got bought up .
I'm not looking for a collector grade gun . Just a nice decent looking one . This will just be a fun plinking gun . But the way I see it is for how cheap and plentiful they are ... If I'm gonna own one , it may as well be a nice one . I don't like like beat up junk . If that was all here was to choose from than I probably wouldnt bother owning one .
Anyways .. Thanks for the info. I will be making the trip to return this one today . I'll let you know how I make out finding a good one .
Thanks

We've been over this so many times. You will NEVER get a deal at Cabelas. Its a horrid, horrid place. Essentially the problem is that no one there gives a ####.

Ordering a milsurp from a big box store will most certainly always be a crap shoot.
Buy from your LGS or a CGN sponsored dealer.
