I ordered myself a so called super grade sks from cabelas on Black Friday . This is my first sks . I was a little reluctant ordering one online without getting to look it over and pick a nice one ... So that's why I opted to pay the extra $50 and get a super grade . Thinking this would assure I got a nice one . The website said these are premium grade unissued hand picked rifles.
Well like I said .... It's my first sks and I've never really looked one over before so I have nothing to compare it to . But this can't be the cream of the crop when it comes to these guns .
I know very little about these guns . Kinda bought it on a whim cuz of how cheap they are ... And what little I have read online about them has been positive . They are cheap.. Reliable and fun to shoot . So figured splurge for a super grade and I couldn't go wrong .
Well I think they went through the whole lot and picked the biggest turd they could find and shipped it to me as a bad joke.
The stock is rough . The fore end where it meets the barrel is all hacked up and looks like it was chiselled with a dull screw driver . The barrel and bayonet look like they are painted black . Not totally sure .. But doesn't look like blueing on any of my other guns . the date on top is 1954 but all the other pieces say 1985 . Not sure if this is a serial number or possibly the date it was refurbed ? 1985 is also scratched into the side of the barrel . Like it was just scratched in with knife or something by a 6 year old . Also the but stock end plate is worn looking with chipped paint and rust .
Now if I would of just opted for a regular sks and paid a bargain price I woulda still be dissapointed , but would probably live with it considering it's a used surplus rifle . But this seems pretty sad for a so called "super grade" so I guess what I'm asking is.... Am I being too critical of a surplus gun ? Or did I get scammed like I think I did ? The gun is going back either way cuz if this is a good one ... Then I don't want an sks .
Only reason I took a chance on ordering one online is the nearest place I can buy one is a 2 hour drive away . Now I gotta make that drive anyways to take it back and try to pick one that's decent ... Or just get my money back .
Is there any tips you guys can give me to pick a good one when I return this junk ? Any years better than others ? Anything I can look for that will indicate a true unissued rifle ? Like I mentioned ..my bayonet blade is the same black at the barrel and everything else . Looks painted . Most pics of sks I've seen the blade part is silver or polished looking . Is this a particular model ? Or is mine painted like I think ?
Anyways .. It's going back tomorrow . Any tips you guys could offer me to pick a good one would be much appreciated . Thanks
