Superhuman efforts to accurize 10/22s?

let me clarify right off the bat that i really like 10/22s. i own a couple and have done my share of modding, polishing, dremeling, swapping in aftermarket parts, bedding, etc to tweak their performance. but thats just to tweak -- i basically make small, simple changes to get the most out of the existing design but the rifle stays as an affordable, reasonably accurate plinker.

what i dont understand is why so many people go to superhuman lengths and spend thousands of dollars to try and squeeze one-hole group accuracy out of a 10/22?

leaving .22 rimfire ammo entirely out of the equation, the 10/22 on its own has several serious design issues that are not exactly conducive to benchrest accuracy. yes i know people have been able to squeeze suprisingly small groups out of significantly modded 10/22s, but whats the allure? is it the challenge of taking an econo rifle and making it into a range queen? is it the sense of accomplishment from achieving this with an aluminum-receivered v-blocked econo-plinker?

i am not condemning anyones actions, but im just really curious why more of the accuracy crowd doesnt start with an action that would be easier to accurize, like the 77/22 perhaps?
 
Why do some many thousands of people spend countless thousands of dollars trying to make a carburated POS push rod V8 engine make power?

Wouldn't they be better off just using an Acura, Porsche or Ferrari engine?

Would be a lot cheaper.... Run better too.

Somehow, I don't think that was the point.

I don't understand it myself, a 22 for me is just an economy rifle good for plinking and small game hunting.....I would rather invest in mods on my shotgun or rifles, but thats just me, everyone has thier own ideas and more power to them if that is the route they go!

NOT everybody lets the ammo out of equation.
After you invested money, work and whatnot to pimp a gun,
shooting bulk ammo may be cheap fun, but some people
are not satisfied with that.
They want to push towards that supreme accuracy
with everything they can.
That includes screwd-on barrel (as opposed to v-blocked),
after market receivers (billet alum-alloy, steel) and whatnot.
IMO they do that as a hobby, as a compulsive life-long obsession,
or simply for fun.

If the question is why they chose 10/22 instead of others,
I think is because of the HUGE after-market,
(it MUCH exceeds the 1911 or ar15 aftermarket),
HUGE knowledge on the net,
cheap starting basic package and not only.

If the interest was in shooting a dead-on accurate gun from the factory,
then everybody was shooting this: 3w.bleiker.ch
(provided they had the money).

The 10/22 is not perfect.
It came out in 1964 as a budget gun, FFS!!!
But for the reasons above, is the #1 choice for hobbists.
It is closely followed by some other rimfire long guns,
597, CZ, etc., but for the moment it holds its ground.
 
i dunno about one hole groups, but i can place my bullets in the space of a quarter or less with my 10/22 from 25 yards. havevn't done any mods to the gun or anything. also haven't really tried longer ranges yet, so i guess 25 yard groups is isn't that impressive.
 
since we're making cracks about tikka...

guess i'm not in the "cool club". imo, tikka rifles feel like tupperware. no thanks. i'll take my remington 700. :)
 
For the same reason I bought an insanely fast motorcycle to beat musclecars I sold my 1022 and bought a CZ. It took a while for me to realise that what I wanted was accuracy and not a fun plinker. We just bought an old (58) BRNO single shot trainer for the other half for her to shoot. In at Bits of Pieces to get set up to take a scope(old eyes and iron sight are not a good mix). But then for some people, and I include myself in that, sometimes it is the building that is the fun and not the end result. Whatever turns your crank. As long as there is some fun involved eh? Just my $0.02 of course.:)
 
notice how all the other guns suggested as more accurate are all bolt? other than a done up 10/22 and the T/C what are your options for accurate semis?
