Surplus Crate Adventure

Personally I would refer to get spam cans & open them when/if I see fit. What bothers me more is the notion of our nanny state having to open each spam can and individually bilingually label each cardboard box or paper wrapped pack and then repack it into the crates & reseal the crates all for what I ask you???? To keep me safe down the road once I open the spam cans just in case I forget what caliber ammo it is??? FFS!!!! And to top it all off ......... who exactly pays for all this useless unnecessary extra labour & labels??? Some overpaid civil servant somewhere??? If so that boils down to you & me the tax payers are paying for it. If the importer is paying this to satisfy import restrictions & regulations then again .... it is being built into the price! I say ..... give me spam cans & reduce the prices! I'm a big boy & can figure out what kind of ammo it is once the spam can is open & it's in my hand!!
I don't need no stinkin nanny state labels!
I miss the early days when the Czech ammo came lead soldered in cans in the green crates!

That's not the case.

If they've been individually labeled that's the choice of the importer or distributor. When they're labeled like that they can legally be sold by the box.

Just look at Tradex's site. There are at least a half-dozen surplus listings for Czech, Chinese, and Swiss ammo that are in the crate or military packaging and the original spam can, if applicable. And the many dealers, like Westrifle, with spam-canned Russian ammo.

thank the dealers who were opening them and selling the boxes without labels, then the nanny state stepped in and required labels

of course the cost was passed on to the consumer

OK that may be ...... never thought of that but if you're buying by the crate it doesn't make sense for them to open & label every spam can. Just crack open & label what you want to put on the counter for individual pack sales. The useless cost is still getting added in on the crate sales!!

Also ..... a while ago ...... it seemed like there was a time when finding spam cans was next to impossible then they started to reappear again. Maybe I just didn't look hard enough??

I miss the spam cans too, (I actually still have three un-opened) but those days are gone. I'm sure part of the reasoning was related to smuggling goods other than ammo in those crates. If no-one opened them, what would stop you from filling a crate with guns, heroin, whatever, re-soldering it, and shipping it? Nothing. This way the shipper has to verify the goods inside, and customs can do the same, if they so desire.

Never thought of that and while I suppose it's a definite possibility I'm still not buying into it since there are plenty of sealed spam cans available now. I would expect between dogs & xrays most canned goods wouldn't need opening ....... just think of all the canned goods in supermarkets that get through unopened.

Like I said, it's the importer's call on the individual packaging. And like Luke S. said, it came to the gov'ts attention when retailers were breaking crates for individual sale without labels. It's just a cost of doing business.

The supply of surplus, crated, canned or otherwise comes and goes depending on importers and distributors stocks. That's why I always stock up when it's available. It rarely gets cheaper.

I should have mortgaged my house when Districorp had the $300/1000 FNM and Hirtenberger 7.62 NATO and bought them out. Would have been my best investment ever.

Ammo lasts almost forever whether it is in Spam cans or not.

Does it go boom? It will go boom 30 years from now.

That may be & yes I do have GI ammo cans to use in the meanwhile but I just think there's something very cool about my son being able to crack into a virgin can of long extinct milsurp ammo 30 years after I'm gone! Wouldn't you just love to have a sealed crate of 303BR?? Just think of the cool factor it would have cracking open something from 70 years ago finding it like it was made yesterday! Sorta like a time capsule. Maybe I think about these things too much! LOL!!!

I agree, buy it when it's affordable and available. I wasn't necessarily complaining about the cost of surplus ammo, just the extra cost of the labeling when buying by the crate. Personally I love being able to shoot reasonably priced center fire ammo! Milsurp ammo rules for volume shooting (except for .22) I remember when I was a kid being able to go down to the local gun shop with my dad and buying 303BR by the pound using one of those old hardware store scales with the big hanging bowl. Used to scoop it out of a wooden barell with a big cast aluminum dipper & get the owner to dump it into a brown paper bag & off we would go. Reminds me of going in one of those bulk food joints nowadays. I didn't know about crates & spam cans back then but I was shooting surplus center fire on the cheap and that's what mattered!!!!!!

What, your saying the theory I spent a whole minute dreaming up might be BS? I'm hurt. That's the last time I make sh1t up here, everybody's a critic...;)

Terrible! TERRIBLE, I say! I probably won't be able to sleep for a week now. Wait until the friggin' UN gets its way - then you will have something to whine about. Be lucky if you can get an empty spam can.....

SKS's are not picky, brother, they don't care if the ammo comes in a spam can or not! if it goes bang when you pull the trigger and your SKS spits out the hull and happily loads another life is good! My buddy cracks open a Russian crate gets through all the metal and unloads all the ammo into an ammo can anyway, bulk style, can't get it through the SKS fast enough!

... I think I would've been happier and better off paying a zoo keeper 300$ to have a elephant stand on my nuts. At least would've felt better...

I can arrange this for you, and it will only cost you $250. Video of the encounter,if desired, will require an extra fee. Travel to Toronto and any associated accomodations will be at your expense, unless you want to crash on my couch. Contact me by PM.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Bob Barker got rid of Toronto's elephant problem a while back now.

But, there should be some Pandas here soon, if that helps.

You're right, what was I thinking? Good thing I'm being kept safe from myself! I should just sit down, shut up & start conforming .......... resistance is futile! Laugh2Laugh2Laugh2

Current Events fail.

Elephants are still here. Lil' Bobbie seems to have lost interest, but the extremists still insist on sending them to a sanctuary with an active TB problem.

Pandas arrived almost three weeks ago.

You may want to specify PRE nut stand accomodations on your couch... post might be a little messy and loud as he moans and groans and wishes he had his cardboard boxed ammo and his dangly bits
