Hey all,

I've found a listing on guntrader.ca that I suspect to be fraudulent.
No money has exchanged hands but contact has been made and all the images are traceable via google to other blogs/sales.

Whats the generally accepted procedure in situations like this?

The Suspect Listing

The e-mail I received read as follows:
"
Hello,

Yes, my Colt Model 1848 Colt Dragoon Revolver is an antique. It is a
nice Colt 3rd Model Dragoon .44 caliber revolver. Scarce 8” barrel.
Late serial number. Gun has some isolated pits but overall this is a
pretty good Dragoon. Gun is all matching, and has even patina. Grips
are very good. Excellent markings and superb cylinder scene. Fine
working order and excellent bore and chambers. Even retains the
original cylinder safety pin which is often smashed or damaged. The
fine original grips retain nearly all the original arsenal oil finish.
Extra crisp overall and a truly superior example of the scarcest of
the Dragoon Models.

It will cost $870 and shipping is $150.

I have pictures attached to this email.

Thank you
R. Silvano"

I've traced down a few of these type of listing. Most I have traced back to Nigeria. Once they email you, take a look at the email header. You can see what email servers the mail has passed through. From there, you can trace the country origin of the IP addresses and voila - location found. There are tons of these ads on guntrader.ca and usedfirearms.ca. There are also lots of legitimate ads as well. You just have to separate the wheat from the chafe.

As for what you can do, report it to the site admin. They will delete the account. Then the user will have to create a new account to start over. And they will.

Unfortunately, there's not much to do about this, and spending the time to report to the admin is likely pointless (at least my past experience... the ads are either taken down or left up). If you can add a comment to the ad, you might as well, but I've stopped doing anything more as no one can keep up with these scammers. The best defence is to learn to recognize the ads (as you did) and move on.

Run away quickly if its too good to be true then it probably is.
I bet if you ask him if its ok for someone local too look at it he wont reply.

Thanks guys, the value made me wonder right away but the e-mail was the icing on the cake - "original arsenal oil finish". The pictures he sent me and the one on the front page are two totally different guns as well, he cites a "superb cylinder scene" and the one in the pics doesn't even have the hint of a scene. Took him almost a week to get back to me, too. Pretty shoddy con-man, on top of some poor ethical code :p

CGN is definitely the way I'd like to go when the time comes, I just like to cast about me and see whats out there.

Aside from the rest, that shipping fee would be for something coming from the Moon by dog sled.
You mention this to anyone at Guntrader.ca? Just curious.

Why do you post this here? If you're concerned, report it to the relevant police agency or the website it's listed on. If you can't do that then it's just gossip and hearsay and you should keep it to yourself instead of polluting these forums.

CGN should start a new subforum for gossip mongering, multiple reposts of scarey reloading incidents, and bear defense. It would give those people who like that sort of thing a place to go and talk about silly crap without annoying the rest of us. We could call it the the Daycare Centre. :)

I don't think the OP's desire to buy a Dragoon and responding to a listing on a web site qualify s as gossip mongering.
I have bought Antiques from the net and if there are scammers out there I want to know about it

?? he didn't respond to the listing, and making accusations without proof actually DOES meet the definition of gossip.
Gosh sakes - there are dozens of scams on that website all the time, do we really need to start a thread for every one of them?

Oh c'mon - would you really have sent money to this ad without the "warning" from the OP? I don't believe you are that silly, Skinny. :)

There is a (admittedly slim) possibility that this seller is actually legitimate. If OP doesn't have more proof than this then it is just hearsay and maybe even libelous, and there is a chance he could be doing a disservice to an honest seller. Don't be a lieberal - try to grasp the difference between facts and opinions.

If you're concerned - then check it out yourself or make a fraud report to police. Gossip is for old women and kids.

Add more bran to your diet, it will help. We could also start a new forum where nutters can just criticize any given OP as to how wrong they are in their understanding that one can post what they will on the internet...we could call it Jethunters hideaway.:)

To the OP, if your gut is making you have second thoughts, run don't walk away. And thanks for the heads up.
