Suspension of Alliant Powder Orders

Cancelled bookings is a great way to lower guidance. Lowered guidance is a great way to reduce share price. Reduced share price is a great way to package the brand up for sale.

Not surprising considering there is a war going on in Europe & whoever is not involved is stocking up just in case!

Plus don't forget that China is the major world-wide supplier of nitrocellulose & they have apparently recently decided to mostly curtail its export.

But let's review where the powder we use is actually manufactured.

Quoted for posterity. Thanks for the info.

So even though IMR is basically made-in-Canada it disappeared like everything else. And it was the Hodgdon brands that made the best recovery.

There is the point that after learning new load formulas involving what we could finally get, it may be too much trouble to switch back to what we were using before, or too difficult to trust a supplier who was out of the market longer, so market share is going to end up being shifted to the brands that came back earliest.

Not knowing your situation, one lesson most here should have learned was not to purchase powder/primers/bullets/cases by the pound or hundred counts.

Purchase in BULK

For many of us older folks the present situation is NORMAL. It's always been feast or famine when it concerns the availability of components.

Right after the WWII/Korea components dried up, it took a while for the manufacturers to replenish ammunition stocks for world governments, and we were left with minimal if any selection of components.

Most of the always-flaring minor brush wars around the world ate up most of the surplus, and the civilian market came along to clean up the dregs.

It's always been that way.

Then, of course, the facilities producing the components, break down, wear out or are legislated out of existence to make room for other industrial use.

I can only imagine what's going to happen when the world's armies no longer rely on nitrocellulose as a base for their propellants. If you think components are expensive now???????????????

Civilian use of the components used to make ammunition is a drop in the bucket, a very lucrative drop, but when push comes to shove, the biggest client with the cash gets the production.

I can still remember seeing "ration cards" from WWII. They were issued for all sorts of things, such as gasoline, engine oil, grease, pots and pans, food, etc.

You still had to pay for them, but could only purchase minimal amounts. If you were willing or able to pay "black market" prices there was a lot of stuff available.

I remember one of my early mentors ranting because he had to purchase ammunition from one of the local armories in his area at highly inflated prices. The fellow wouldn't sell it to him unless he had cartridge cases to turn in, so they could write it off as used in practice/training.

This was life for Canadians from 1939-1946. From the stories in hunting camps, ammunition for hunting was almost unobtainable during that time and there were all sorts of regulations to adhere to as well.

There were less than 2 billion people around then, production methods were set up for that level. Now, we've got 8+ billion Bipedal methane producers roaming the earth and production methods are barely keeping up with demand.

If the war between Ukraine/Russia or the Middle East fiasco escalates, if you don't have a stockpile to outlast the issues???????????

Everyone’s idea of how much components to have on hand is going to be different
It depends on how much a person shoots so a small stash could last years
My neighbor, a pound of powder, a pack of primers and a box of bullets would last him 20 years lol
I do a fair bit of shooting although I have been shooting less the last few years since components have been in short supply
It doesn’t help that I load for 36 different calibers either but I buy a bit here and there when things become available
I’ll be good for a few years but nothing lasts forever unfortunately and if the govt makes reloading components and ammunition unavailable we are all gonna have expensive paperweights eventually

Don't forget VihtaVuori, Finland. We have our second container arriving next week, which is a lot more than the 25% of orders received in 2023. The Nammo Lapua group is spending 150 million EUR on production updates.

Additionally they are building a primer facility.

Peter

I have been reloading since the early 1960's, and can echo bearhunters thoughts.
Have seen plenty of "ups and downs" over several decades.

I will be gone before I suffer a lack of components, lol. Foresight has been a handy
thing to possess.
I do hate it when they discontinue a powder I particularly like, though. Dave.

Gasoline was rationed so people wouldn't wear out Rubber Tires. Beer was rationed on a Politician's Whim, this Country has never been short of Barley and Water. Victory Bonds were to take "Money" out of circulation to keep inflation down. Pots and pans were collected to make the population feel they were contributing. Suppose the point is that many "shortages" are artificial creations.

Absolutely Correct ! CREATED SHORTAGES have led to more demand and higher PROFITS for the Greedy ! JMO RJ

Well how do you explain that the VV powder are the one that are avail more than any US made powder ?

Those companies make the choices to stop selling to civilian to make bigger profit selling to military. Thats all.
There is no obligation for them to do that but they prefer to go after lucrative Gov contract first. Has always, money talk.

If the companies can't get the base ingredients for their product there is no decision to be made. You simply stop selling the product you can no longer manufacture.

And you're saying that you wouldn't if you were in that position??

Yup ! Absolutely ! JMO to ! RJ

We deal directly with Lapua and have done so for 30 years and not once have they made false statements, but here we have comments from ill-advised individuals who know nothing of Nammo's relationship with the Finnish Defence forces. The Finns take defence seriuosly and despite size have 6 times the number of tanks as Germany and the second largest army in Europe. Nammo for sure has Finnish defence as the priority because they take defence seriously, unlike Canada and many other dreamers.

Some brass manufacturing was suspended for the same reason, but as mentioned earlier they are investing 150 million EUR to increase production including primers.

Peter
