Ian Runkle had a video on this subject - yes the text of the OIC is vague, the cop may decide and charge accordingly, then the judge will decide. If there's any question about you having another suitable firearm - don't do it. This will only really work for a sustenance hunter who owns one (or very few) gun and can't afford another.

If you have some form of government paperwork showing you are a sustenance hunter, the officer who stops you would not be in a position to detain, arrest and charge you. Unfortunately a hunting licence is simply not enough given there is people who hunt for trophy and sport which is legal but not sustenance.
Treaty rights or those who live a subsistence life where they are so remote that hunting licence and tags are not needed is an entirely different matter
